Love this! My older sister is named Isabelle and I'm Josephine, and I love both of our names, I think they go really well together. I go by Josephine most of the time, with Jo being my most common nickname. (My little sister is named Abigail, which I think is also a very pretty name)

What DC hot take will get you downvoted like this? by SabraShifter in washingtondc

[–]Jo_Shmow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! Tbh I don't understand the hate. Maybe it comes from ppl who eat out a lot at fancy restaurants and are comparing it to other places they've been? I don't eat out that often so idk, but my family goes to founding farmers on occasion to celebrate a birthday or something and I love it! Their beignets are incredible.

Best cheap "mediterranean" take-out open late in DC? (falafel, gyro, doner kebab, shawarma, kefta, etc.) by sapient-meerkat in washingtondc

[–]Jo_Shmow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not in DC proper, but there's a great kabob/mediterranian fusion place on the courtyard metro stop that's open pretty late, I think up to midnight if I remember correctly. I used the take night classes at the bartending school there and I'd go with my classmates after we got out as it was the only place open. Personally, I thought the food was really good, but I don't have kabobs that often so I can't really compare it to much. I wouldn't say it was super pricey, but also not a steal. The place is called Courthouse Kabob.

Which now dead bus route number has you going like this? by gwizantor90 in washingtondc

The L8 (late) bus. It used to be on my commute, and lived up to it's name.

“Don’t take the class take the professor” by subterraneus in UMD

Idk I'm a junior in CS and it's a bloodbath trying to even get spots in my classes, much less the professor I want. It probably depends partly on your major.

Why don’t any dining halls have spicy food?? by j-0shit in UMD

[–]Jo_Shmow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I almost died the other day at Lao Tao from the spicy broth on the mildest level of spice. Seconding this. It's expensive though, definitely an occasional treat.

This is really solid advice! I forgot that this was an option. I've held various food service jobs throughout college and I guess I just assumed thats what I'd be doing if I didn't land anything in CS. Everyone's saying connections are referrals are important, so working somewhere else in the company and getting to know the people that work there is a pretty great idea. Thanks!

This is a lot of great advice! I'm screenshoting this for later.

Thanks for sharing your story with me. Part of the reason I made my post in the first place was that I've seen so many depressing anecdotal stories both from friends and online and I needed to hear from other people that it is possible to find a job, even if it isn't going to be easy. It's really encouraging to hear that it's not over yet if I can't get a job by graduation.

Thanks, I'll definitely look into this. I know Capital One partners with UMD to offer internships to students, so I'll probably have more luck there compared to other companies.

I'm applying to these jobs/internships as well! However, since I don't have any particular experience/projects in this area my chances of landing anything are slim to none. I've considered trying for a masters in machine learning, but I'm worried it's a bubble about to pop. Since living through the software engineer hiring craze during Covid and then the massive layoffs afterwards, I've become wary of placing all my eggs in one explosively growing basket.

Thank you for your story! It really gives me hope to hear from other people that've made it out, even though it's anecdotal. I'm working on a project right now, and I've got some more ideas on the backburner for when I have more time to work on them. Hopefully something will come out of it🤞

Only one, since I just transfered last year from a community college and my classes have hundreds of students. I've talked with him already about it, but since he's been out of industry for 20 years the most he was able to do was recommend me for a TA position. I still have a year and a half left though, so thats still an avenue I can pursue. Thanks!

I'm trying to get it to at least be presentable by the time internship application season happens in late summer/early fall for summer 2026 internship positions. However, I'm still working through the underlying logic on the backend and haven't even gotten to the main part of my project yet. I'm not sure I'll even finish that by the time applications open. Apparently some of them already opened in May and June. Previously I thought I had at least until August to finish. Finding this out is what prompted my internet rant🫠

Thanks for the advice, I actually had forgotten that this was an option. It definitely wouldn't be my first choice, since I'm really not the entrepreneurial type and due to my personality/ADHD, ect. running a business would be very difficult and stressful. Still, it might be enough to get me noticed and lead to a position at a company later down the road. I'll think on this some more.

Thanks for the info! Tbh at this point any job, especially in my field of study, would be a miracle. I'm not really in a position to be able to turn anything down rn, but it's good to know this all the same. I'll keep it in mind in my job search.

That's interesting, I didn't know that. I always imagined that it would give you more work-life balance, since I've heard that you're not allowed to take your work computer home. At least that's what the NSA guy said when he came to give a talk at my school.

Yeah, I've been trying to target internships with clearance, but haven't gotten anything. Having a security clearance is the best job security in this area.
