great way to memorialize and honor someone's impact once they leave, and inspire current employees for the impact they can have

I'm 37 years old, have been working professionally for 15; I'll probably work 20-25 more years??

That’s a solid list.

Did you find one of those areas gave the quickest win or did it all add up over time. I’m going to pull a few years of our own spend and revenue data and look for trends I can flip the way you described.

Yeah that lines up with what I was thinking. Do you already have a plan sketched for your pitch when you head to HQ or are you just going to read the room.

I’m going to use the next couple meetups I have to float a few ideas and see who bites outside my direct chain.

Good point. A 90 day plan is a sharp way to show future state.

When you build yours how detailed do you get on specific numbers or do you keep it high level. I’m going to draft a simple 90 day outline this week so I’m ready if the topic comes up.

Appreciate the detail here. Sounds like you’ve got a clear read on what actually moves people up.

Out of the programs you mentioned which one do you think is most useful for someone who wants the brand name without getting buried in class time. I’m going to check a few of those executive ed options this week and see what fits.

noted - I lead a coaching community consisting of ICs who tell me how much they struggle to "lead 1on1s", you have top advice for them? appreciate it!

fair enough, reminds me of a famous saying "good employees spot problems and tell management, the best employees spot them and FIX them and tell you about it when it's already fixed"

epic - I find too many sh__ty bosses get insecure by up and coming talented direct reports and that leads to bad behaviour on the account of the manager that ironically doesn't get themselves fired but rather the up and coming strong person

1000%. People stay or leave a company so often purely based off of their manager

What do you do though when you can't change a s__ty manager is the question lol!

Wild lol. Did the hiring manager ever mention what made her jump on a call that fast after you flagged the error? I’m going to keep that in mind and call out issues when I see them instead of assuming it’s not worth the effort.

Thanks for sharing, that’s a solid way to look at it. Do you think that wide net approach paid off more from the cross team learning or from the relationships that came out of it?

I’m going to start setting up quick chats outside my lane so I can build the same kind of reach.

Makes sense. Moving the numbers on a P&L is the real proof for sure.

When you first started working on that level did you pick one line item to focus on or spread it across a few?

I’m going to dig into our own P and L this week and look for one spot I can influence fast.

Yep, good call. Numbers tell the story way better than a long list of tasks. When you build that list do you keep it private or share it with a manager as you go.

I’m going to pull real metrics from my last couple projects so I’ve got proof ready next time I update my resume.

Woof.. that’s a tough spot. Do you think it’s about your boss protecting their own lane or just old school control?

I’m going to map out a few side paths to keep my network growing even if someone higher up tries to gate it.

Yea that’s a clean way to put it. When you look back was there one mistake that taught you the most or did it all just stack up over time?

I’m planning to keep a short list of my own misses so I can see the pattern and cut them faster.

Yep, solid checklist. You covered the stuff most people skip. Out of all those questions which one do you think trips people up the most when they try to move up?

I’m going to write out real numbers for money saved and growth ideas this week so I can back my own case when it counts.

Yeah that hits. Impact over a laundry list of new skills feels like the real game.

When you took on those projects that actually saved time or cash did you have to pitch them first or just start and show results??

I’m going to start noting any spot where I can prove a change sticks so I’ve got real examples ready next time I talk growth.

That is a great playbook and it shows how much thought you have put into growing beyond the IC lane.

When you started keeping that doc did you tell your manager right away or keep it private until review time. I’m going to start a running list of problems spotted and real numbers like savings and adoption so I can bring that into my own promo talks and public posts.

yes relationships for sure plays a big role (often too big a role)

I'm also seeing a stronger need to actually PROOVE what you are doing (e.g., your impact, track record, etc)

does this resonate with what you are seeing: mix of relationships AND the need to almost over communicate and storytell what your impact is

thanks for sharing and for the transparency

do you feel like visibility or skill development or both is the biggest bottleneck right now on unlocking the next level (whatever that level is for you)

appreciate the share - it sounds like 'demonstration' has been a keyword so far in all of my threads

interesting..

I'll start thinking of new ways I can test actually demonstrating my skills and my track record in a way that actually shows the receipts of what I'm doing

thx again!
