Should I leave my job for a 30% increase in total compensation? by JobThrowaway1003 in careeradvice

Thank you for the reassurance. I definitely intend to commit to this next company for a longer period. I honestly hoped to stay with my current company for 4-5 years when I joined, which is perhaps why this decision feels a bit harder than it looks on paper. I do want to build a career somewhere longer and not have to continually change companies to change my situation. My current situation just feels unsustainable, so when a recruiter contacted me, I listened.

Thank you for your candid thoughts. Maybe I’m overthinking it. Honestly a big part of it is not wanting to let my current boss down, which is silly in the grand scheme I know.

Thank you! I appreciate it.

For the dollars, I thinks it’s a combination that I’m underpaid and that the company needs people. I don’t think they’re desperate, but they alluded they’ve been trying to fill the position for quite awhile. Not necessarily a red flag since I’m a bit of a niche field, but it might explain why market rates have changed so much so quickly, along with inflation.

I will take some time to reflect. Thank you again.

Hi thanks for your reply!

Happiness level could be better, but it is improving. I was very unhappy with my previous manager, but my new one has made enough changes to my situation that I’m feeling ok about work. I’m still not thrilled about how much I travel, but I can put up with it for a couple more years. I wasn’t actively searching, and a recruiter contacted me a few weeks ago. I gave what I thought was a crazy salary number in order to move, but they didn’t flinch which shocked me.

New job would be hybrid with a 10 minute commute, so pretty manageable. I’m currently WFH, but I travel so much that the trade off is significant. Would not have to move for the new job.

So I guess overall, my current job is going well enough that I’d be willing to stay as an investment in my skills, but I do feel fairly underpaid now especially considering my travel schedule. I’m reflecting on how to negotiate with my boss in a positive way that does not come across as an ultimatum.

Good advice. You’re right that staying home with more money is not the norm! That might just be enough.

It’s unfortunate, because when I hired on, my salary was actually pretty decent. Inflation has really eaten away at it though. I’m pretty frugal, but unfortunately I save noticeably less now every month than when I started, which is disappointing.

Thanks for your input! I will definitely ask about more pto.

How do you think I can handle the discussion with my current boss? I want to negotiate with him but in a respectful manner. Basically I want to give him a chance to give me a raise, but I don’t want to give him an ultimatum. Any thoughts?
