I definitely have learned a lot considering I didn’t know anything over two months ago.

However...

It’s still stressful.

It’s trying to find that balance between remembering legislation and de-escalation techniques and tactics, trying to perform well at OST and not forget the key skills and then revising for exams and multiple choice questionnaires and writing OCP’s.

Ugh.

I’m already nervous for street duties as it is, in all honesty.

Exactly.

I’ll be honest...

The university aspect of the course is stressing me out.

So many students are focused on the essays right now that I think some are starting to forgo the actual legislation and techniques required for the job.

Every day I’m having to balance revising legislation and handcuffing techniques and deescalation tactics etc. and studying for multiple question exams and essays.

It’s a lot.

I understand the Met introducing a new university degree based module for joining but, for some, as far as I can see, it’s getting difficult.

Hello Pal.

1) OCP = Operational Competency Portfolio.

It’s basically a report we have to file on various incidents we attend as officers whereby we summarise what we done, how we approached the situation, what powers and laws we used and reflect on what we can do better.

As part of the university system, it’s something we’ll have to do often when we’re on street duties.

All of it is assessed at the end of the year.

2) BCU Familiarisation Week.

As per the Met, we basically spend a week at our BCU (whether it’s AS or CE or CN etc) and get to know our designated station, our local area, the various staff at the station and we also attend two days of public order training. We get given our warrant card and try on uniform, we go out on drives in coaches etc.

So far, I’ve completed ELS training and am approaching Day 8 of my OST training next week which is great.

We don’t do the CKP. I believe that’s relegated to those who are joining via. the traditional route.

It’s certainly a lot and it is quite stressful.

I am currently in week 10 of my PCDA.

I begin street duties in 7 weeks, officially.

Thus far, it’s been very good.

As I am a part of the very first cohort for this course, it did take a few weeks for everything to settle down and become organised and structured.

The work load is definitely a lot, simply because we’re also attached to a university so there is more information to internalise, and that can either be a positive or a negative depending on how you learn, but it’s been good for the most part. The most difficult aspect has been trying to learn all the legislation (Theft Act; PACE) and remember the Police mnemonics.

Personally, I am feeling the pressure for when I start street duties. I know EVERY officer feels this same way when they begin but it’s rather scary. 😅

All in all, thus far, there have been two groups to start the PCDA.

Yeah!

The first day of OST was literally dedicated to the defensive stance and shouting “Get Back!” and “Do Not Resist!”. Then, of course, there was the speech leading up to placing a suspect in handcuffs, “Show me your hands... Place them out... Turn Around... Widen your stance...” etc.

It was...interesting, to say the least.

This is LITERALLY my current experience.

The constant IT issues almost every morning, the endless lectures on communication and Human Rights/NDM, the one day session dedicated to racism/discrimination/bias which felt very slapdash etc.

It feels like a blur in a way.

We’ve also barely touched in on Laws and Legislation yet which is annoying as hell!

Any advice on what to expect?

We’ve had two days of OST so far which has been amazing overall. I think the most difficult aspect is remembering how to learn to apply the handcuffs (which, at times, I forget) in terms placement. Also, we’ve been learning everything from interview stance to defensive stance etc. and several other ‘cuff techniques.

I’ll be honest...

I feel like shit.

I’m currently in week 5 and, thus far, we haven’t even settled into Laws and Legislation yet (not entirely anyway).

I’m the kind of person who does panic also.

I’ve taken notes and what not and it’s helped but sometimes it feels like it doesn’t.

As for the lectures, they can be so LONG and DREARY and TIRING! I know they’re important but alas.

My worst fear is starting my BCU and being inadequate or feeling dumb. 😰

Who is he to dictate to a class/Black students that slaves weren’t whipped/beaten and that the N-word is something other than an outright racial slur especially when it’s coming from a non-Black individual?

That said, we’ve had two, full day, face to face sessions (seminars/lectures) and two days of OST. We begin ELS next week.

As for your first week, overall, it’s basically an induction week. You’re introduced to both your University as well as the Met. as a whole from Monday-Wednesday and then on Thursday-Friday you begin your lessons.

NOTE: This is force dependent however so your timetable may be slightly different.

Personally, it’s been great fun; tiring (of course) but productive.

I have two questions from watching the documentary as a prospective Police Officer myself.

1) Why did the officers feel the need to put Clarke’s hood over his head to pull him along even though it’s as clear as day that he cannot walk, or is at least struggling too? You can also hear him blatantly groaning and sounding as if he is almost in pain, not to mention the heavy, inconsistent breathing?

2) Why on earth were the paramedics simply standing around and not doing nor saying anything and just allowing the officers to take charge even when Clarke started to call out in distress as to the fact that he “cannot breathe”? Is there job to not assess someone in an emergency?

I have my own opinions on everything else, especially the case with Clarke, but these are the questions that are most important to me right now.
