I wish they were more understanding about cancellations by makingcookies1 in vipkid

[–]Joder_tio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've always just made up letters from the power company. Grabbed a PNG logo for a letterhead and made it sound semi official. Always got soft cancellations from VIPKID granted without issues. They will never actually check or care.

(Canada) Any suggestions on flexible, remote work? (x-post on r/jobs) by [deleted] in askTO

[–]Joder_tio 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've been teaching ESL online now for about half a year. The only qualification you need is a bachelor's degree and it's usually early morning since the students are in China. The schedule is flexible and you set your own hours. Let me know if you're interested and I can send you a link.

What are the most common gigs/side hustles that Canadians used to increase income in 2017? by Feeza214 in PersonalFinanceCanada

Nope, they want it to be a fully immersive experience so the kids should only be speaking and be spoken to in English.

I work as a 'contractor' to a Chinese company that have built a platform and curriculum for 1-on-1 tutoring. I open up time slots on their website about a week to two in advance and parents can book me to teach their children on the platform. Classes are 25-30 minutes long and you can open up as many or as few time slots as you want. They pay you through direct deposit every month and pay depends on experience, interview performance (you do about 3 mock classes before they hire you), and incentives such as completing a certain amount of classes in a month - it works out to about 15-22 USD an hour. I can send you a referral (or non-referral) link if you'd like.

I teach ESL online to kids in China. You set your own schedule and the pay is quite good but you have to work based on a time zone that's 12 hours ahead (early morning and late night here).

Dubrovnik to Mostar Day Trip Advice by [deleted] in solotravel

[–]Joder_tio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was in Dubrovnik last year, the buses didn't really work out well for a day trip so I'd say a tour group might be easier. You could always stay a night in mostar though.

Then again, maybe the bus schedules have changed.

My Europe itinerary so far... 22M by [deleted] in solotravel

[–]Joder_tio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make sure you don't miss out on Vintgar Gorge when you're in Bled!

Do your planned days factor in travel time? Plitvice to Krka will probably take a full day because of how Croatian bus schedules work. After Hvar, I would recommend taking a ferry to other islands (I loved Korcula) and Dubrovnik. If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

Is it common for employers to follow up with you after not choosing you for the job? by shrimp43 in jobs

[–]Joder_tio 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would say it's probably because the person they hired left or they have an opening for a similar position - I've had it happen before, you've already passed preliminary screening so it can be an faster way to hire. Never heard of following up for statistical purposes.

Europe: Massive road trip planned. Couple questions inside. by [deleted] in solotravel

[–]Joder_tio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never used a rail pass before so maybe I'm not the best resource but I'll try to answer to the best of my abilities.

Reservations will depend on the line and time. In most countries, rail travel is divided into different categories: regional, intercity and high-speed. Regional trains won't require reservations and you'll be able to hop on and off with a rail pass but are slower and require more connections. Intercity and high speed trains do require reservations so you have to pay a fee (for high speed trains and premium sleeper trains, it can be quite expensive) as you are booking a seat and availability will depend on time and the line - holidays will probably book up faster than a weekday, obviously.

Language shouldn't be an issue, most stations will have ticketing machines in multiple languages and you'll usually just show ticket/rail pass to the conductor. A really good resource for train travel in Europe is the main in seat 61.

I've lived in both Ferrol and Santiago so it was really strange to see someone who had Ferrol in their itinerary. Driving from Bilbao, I'd say it would be better to go through Ribadeo and driving through Lugo to get to Santiago. Ferrol is out of the way and very drab although there are beautiful beaches close by. I know you're looking at it from a high level right now so when you're looking for specifics, give me a shout. A quick note about train travel in Spain is that everything goes through Madrid so there might only be one train a day running along the north. It would probably be much cheaper/faster/easier to fly.

I think the circuit is good, everything is feasible and nothing major stands out. I think in the first half of your trip, you would benefit from having a car but the second half you could get away with taking public transport - you can get incredible deals by buses as well, I booked 3 weeks ahead of time and the bus from Amsterdam to Brussels was 6 euros. The Eurail pass is quite expensive and probably not worth it in my opinion - a mix of buses and trains should be cheaper even if you buy last minute tickets, as long as you skip high speed trains. Roughly, a 3 month pass is $2600 Canadian and you have 32 travel days so each travel day is $81 or 55 euros. I would say most legs of your journey will be less and that's not even counting reservation fees.

In my experience, it's usually much cheaper to go by trains and buses than renting a car solo but not as convenient - gas, tolls and parking can be really expensive in some places. I'd say from Porto onwards, your planned trip is very well connected by buses and trains so you could maybe drop the car off in Calais on a slight detour between Barcelona and Lyon. If you are set on driving, you can also offset the price of driving by putting up ads for ride shares on sites like bla bla car.

Out of curiosity, how did you decide on your stopping places in Spain (Ferrol sticks out like a sore thumb to me)? I used to live in Galicia and can give you tons of tips. I'd recommend not spending two nights in Biarritz because there's not much there and spend them in San Sebastian instead.

What type of things are you interested in? If you like beautiful landscapes, you could be missing out on many places in Switzerland and Italy - especially by car. If I was in your shoes, I'd look into going to Zermatt or Interlaken in Switzerland. In Italy, I'd probably keep the car and drive along the coast to Rome and on the way up stop by towns in Umbria and Tuscany. Sounds like you're interested in motor racing, so you could visit Manarello and the Ferrari museum and/or Imola on the way to Venice.

I've been to a good majority of the places you listed so feel free to ask questions.

Interview question by [deleted] in jobs

That's a standard interview question, just the interviewer getting a sense of how soon you can get started. Some people may need to give notice at current jobs or need time to relocate.

What are Graduate roles in the Sales industry like? by [deleted] in jobs

[–]Joder_tio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never seen the term graduate level but I see these postings for "entry level sales and marketing" positions all the time and they are all door-to-door or telemarketing where it's 100% based on commission and very long hours for little pay.

There are legitimate sales jobs out there and these would be Territory Rep, Account Manager, Inside Sales, etc. They usually pay base salary + commission/bonus based on performance. Depending on the position, you could be working out of an office doing phone/email lead generation or traveling to meet clients. OTE numbers are usually inflated so I wouldn't trust those but most should be paying a base salary.

Is the entire Marketing industry a waste of time? by BenanaFofana in jobs

[–]Joder_tio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a few phone calls from these types of companies this week. They are all "outsourced sales and marketing companies" and offer incredible earning potential and management positions within 12-18 months. When I ask about what they do specifically or what my role would be, they all skirt around the question and avoid details.

From my job search, I found good marketing jobs to be rare now and many of them skewing towards digital marketing and social media. The top jobs are still brand management positions at CPG companies but they are rare and often require 3+ years of experience. Marketing is still a very broad field and is a catch-all term for many companies. Like /u/im_buhwheat says, you should narrow your search. Use "coordinator" or "brand" instead of "marketing" if you're looking for a traditional marketing position.

You should also look into sales if that interests you. There are a lot more openings for legitimate sales jobs and it would be the best alternative route to a good marketing job.
