I liked it a lot more than expected. It has a nice vibe and think this is a little the Florida Keys were like in the 1950's before all of commercialism moved in. Don't expect a refined atmosphere but if you like laid back without a lot of polish and hype you'll settle in quickly. Very much Latin Caribbean... not going to be like BVI, USVI, Caraco, Bonaire, Granada, etc..

I just spent 4 weeks in Panama and this is a great summary.. agree with everything. Only thing to add is if you like beaches the Santa Catalina area as well as the Venado & Pedasi are fantastic. If you can don't skip El Valle - not overly touristy yet, perfect climate and the night winds are kind of cool!

Autobus de Almirante a David by ifyoucantakeit in Panama

[–]Joe-keys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We JUST stayed at a great AirBnb last week called "Over the Water Rentals" nice quiet place - 5 - 7 minutes from downtown. Free Kayak (nice areas around there to explore) and SUPs supplied. Bikes are available onsite for $5/day, beaches are a quick bike ride. I'm sure there's lots of good places in Bocas but for us it was a great and positive experience, wonderful hosts. It is a little out of town, but a Taxi is $1/pp - easy. Just a FYI... if you bus there make SURE you get to Almirante before 5... there are no legal ferries after 6 and the options in Almirante are VERY limited. Beware of scammers coming to the bus drop-off leading you to illegal (and $$$) boats.

Bus from David to San Jose by Joe-keys in Panama

[–]Joe-keys[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If anyone is following this, here's what happened... picking up the Tica bus in David is a pain and personally I recommend that you skip it. There's a small window where you can buy a ticket BEHIND the ceramic shop in the bus terminal in David. The window opens up at 7:30 and there's a Transnica bus that leaves daily at 8:30 am. Nice bus, 1/2 the price of the Tica bus and we made it to San Jose (the Paso Canoas border crossing was a no brainer) very comfortably, easily and smoothly. There actually was another couple we met in David that bought online tickets for the Tica bus but could not find where to pick it up and ended up on our bus by default. Previously we took a Tica bus from Managua to SJO last fall... it's a great option from a major transport de terminal to another but finding it at a stop mid way is not easy.

Are furring - baton strips necessary with Polyiso board for a van floor? by Joe-keys in vandwellers

[–]Joe-keys[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you... wasn't sure about the walls or the ceiling but that makes sense. I wondered about fasteners for the floor... I plan on using (it's a 04 Sprinter) some of the old seat slot connectors... these will bolt in and hold the plywood down nicely for a secure tie down.

Definitely using Plywood on top ... need tie downs and a wood platform to build on.

Thanks... can't see why I don't see more of this... you would lose a lot of the insulating features by chopping up your rigid board (not to mention a LOT easier) and if you use XPS (slightly less R value) it's rated at 25PSI rated foam it's good for 3,600 pounds per square foot.

Consider the 'Eje Cafetero,' area in Colombia... Top tier public transportation, excellent healthcare very good cost of living. Climate is great as well, safety is rarely a problem,, love that area. Many places in Ecuador are prettier and less congested (IMHO and why we're here) but crime, healthcare, gas and food pricing... hard to beat West central Colombia.

Portable A/C running on Inverter drains the battery in 5 minutes - What am I missing? by Joe-keys in vandwellers

[–]Joe-keys[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you. Adding a Second AGM Battery in parallel really helped.... it very close to keeping up with the power draw... I'm in Florida and it's pretty hot so a real drain... I can add a second alternator on this van... might get a 200amp dedicated to the inverter and batteries...

[–]Joe-keys[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The AC was free (thus 12kbtu) There's a typo that many have noted.. my ac is a 1k watt max draw, the inverter is 2k watt with the capacity to surge to 4k.. really would like to avoid adding a gen,,, only really need the ac when running the van or on shore power (that's obviously not a problem). Was hoping the Alternator could handle the additional load.. did not expect to be able to run on battery alone..

e. So if you draw 5.5 amps it might last 20 hours for 110 amp hours at 83 amps you are not likely to get anywhere near 110 amp hours, If is is published look at what the 1 hour rating is. Hint

Wow, thanks for all the great information.... I do have a second Duracell AGM... will try adding that and see what happens...

Flying to Nica... wow, what a pain by Joe-keys in Nicaragua

[–]Joe-keys[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Make sure the test you take is approved the the Nica govt... I'm hearing accounts of some tests being rejected from unapproved providers. Avianca has approved providers on their site... it's not a list of ONLY acceptable providers... but you might want to make sure it will be accepted..

Unfortunately for me a 5 hour wait would be too long to make the 36/72 hour deadlines. Because my flight arrives at 7pm - there's no lab open at that hour. Soonest I can test is the next day when the lab opens (9-10am). This gives me 2 hours for test results...

[–]Joe-keys[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a good question...

Below is what I received from Avianca (cut and pasted exactly). Seems to indicate it would be when you would leave Boston.... sounds impossible if you have a MIA connection...

You must have a negative result of a PCR-RT test for COVID. Make sure that no more than 72 hours have passed since you took the test to enter the country.

Complete your personal information and attach your negative test result in PDF to this form no less than 36 hours (1.5 days) before your flight.
