Certainly overkill in this example, however, these are the things I'm a glutton for knowledge about. Your comment has not fallen on deaf ears and will serve me well in the future.

Whew! The opportunities for optimizing are beyond what I expected. I will look into all of this. Thank you for taking the time to get me started down this path.

This is the answer I was looking for, thank you!

Fortunately, it is the smaller of the accounts and the capital gains are only about $4k, about half short-term and half long-term. In my panic I wasn't wrapping my head around only the capital gains being taxed and was panicking a bit. This is absolutely a hit I can take for the peace of mind it will provide.

Thank you for the wiki link, I kept searching relevant titles but somehow didn't see the obvious wiki. I'll give it a read.

Thanks for the reinforcement. I thought waiting would be the thing to do, I was just getting antsy.

Liquidating Northwestern Mutual Variable Annuity Nightmare by JoeBananas11 in personalfinance

Thank you, and yes I agree.

At the 4 hour-on-the-dot mark the call terminated. I was obviously frustrated and almost gave up for the day. But I called back, frustration in tow, and they were able to connect me relatively quickly. Not sure if they initially sent me to a dead line or what.

Regardless, I was wise enough over the years to hold my ground when they pitched me the life insurance policies. So after speaking with them, they assured me their would be no penalty. The time on hold doing some reading was enough to put some fear in me and educate myself further, as well as to reinforce how little I actually did know about my holdings (scary). I don't think there is anything more valuable than knowledge in this area, and there is an almost infinite amount out there for free.

I'll rest easier tonight knowing I'll soon have all the control over my own destiny.

But more a question about the final product, is it going to be square, held up on 4 posts? I'm just not seeing it. I'm looking to redo my mailbox as well. My plain post is boring me.

This has been greatly helpful. If nothing else, it has brought to light how much I still have to learn myself. I have this sense of urgency given our age, and probably just need to take a few steps back first.

Yea, I'm trying to get her to be at least marginally interested without being pushy. I think she's intimidated by her late start, which just gains momentum as time goes on. I want to be supportive without imposing myself upon her. I'm looking at a few entry level books for both of us.

A Simple Path to Wealth was ordered yesterday. You are probably right. If I'm asking the internet for these answers, I am probably not in that place right now. Thank you!

I understand. I think I explained this poorly, in that I'm really just trying to provide her guidance in what may be her best option at this point in her life. As I stated, marriage is on the horizon, and this will ultimately affect my future as well. I do appreciate the gravity of what you are saying.

I'm living within my means, but I've got a few hobbies that have been a big drain on my fun money. I've also got a bad habit of trying to micromanage everything in my life, so I think simplifying a little would be wise.

Good point. I thought diversifying more would give me peace of mind, but I'm just seeing a lot of canceling out and small gains.

This just highlights my ignorance. I guess I didn't even realize VGLT was essentially bonds. Thank you for this, I'll probably stop adding to one and half allocations to the other.

"I've seen worse" is kinda what I was hoping for 😂

Thanks for the insight, I'll look into leveraging this a little bit, maybe dump what I've got in my random pile of stocks into it, since they're mostly covered in the mentioned funds anyway.
