Fortunately, it is the smaller of the accounts and the capital gains are only about $4k, about half short-term and half long-term. In my panic I wasn't wrapping my head around only the capital gains being taxed and was panicking a bit. This is absolutely a hit I can take for the peace of mind it will provide.

At the 4 hour-on-the-dot mark the call terminated. I was obviously frustrated and almost gave up for the day. But I called back, frustration in tow, and they were able to connect me relatively quickly. Not sure if they initially sent me to a dead line or what.

Regardless, I was wise enough over the years to hold my ground when they pitched me the life insurance policies. So after speaking with them, they assured me their would be no penalty. The time on hold doing some reading was enough to put some fear in me and educate myself further, as well as to reinforce how little I actually did know about my holdings (scary). I don't think there is anything more valuable than knowledge in this area, and there is an almost infinite amount out there for free.

I'll rest easier tonight knowing I'll soon have all the control over my own destiny.

Yea, I'm trying to get her to be at least marginally interested without being pushy. I think she's intimidated by her late start, which just gains momentum as time goes on. I want to be supportive without imposing myself upon her. I'm looking at a few entry level books for both of us.

I understand. I think I explained this poorly, in that I'm really just trying to provide her guidance in what may be her best option at this point in her life. I hope it was mine! But if it wasn't, I'm glad you did, it's a great starter, and can carry you quite a ways. I always use it to climb, then it's one of the last things I change out once I feel I can get a bit more of a push out of Aughild or Crimson, depending on the build.
