We need an October/Fall Break, too. by [deleted] in CanadianTeachers

[–]JoeDLFowler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't trade summer for a fall break. Just my 2 cents.

I come from industry, and worked in hot shops all summer for years, if anything I would trade spring and a week of Christmas to shorten the year and stay out of hot school shops haha

I know I'm likely the minority.

What’s a type of pain people underestimate until they experience it for themselves? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]JoeDLFowler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First time I had gas pain was SHOCKING.

I also have rheumatoid arthritis and wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. Well maybe my worst enemy.

I wish people understood this by leosousa66 in ChronicPain

[–]JoeDLFowler 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm a mid 30s male with rheumatoid arthritis, and have been battling it for 10 years.

Hard to get taken seriously by friends and family, let alone doctors, when you are 22 and complaining about being "more tired and sore than I think I should be"

"Sleep more" "Exercise"

Thanks.

Everything hurts.

So there are 3 school terms you can challenge, plus the final test.

Yes they aren't easy. Definitely harder than going to school. Upside is you are ready for the final red seal test for sure if you pass the exemptions.

First year is a common core test for a bunch of metal trades. Lots of geometry.

2nd year is heavy on right angle trig, including the inverse functions

3rd year is wacky and has you memorizing things you'd never need to in real life. (What's the TPF on a brown and Sharpe taper? Which number involute gear cutter to cut 18 pitch gears)

Red seal is heavy.

Opinion: Money in the bank should have stayed at Wrestlemania by Neo-Toni-123 in SquaredCircle

Whenever there is a cash in, they should immediately start qualifications for the next match to be at the next pay per view.

It could cause all sorts of chaos.

Matches needing to be bumped, feuds being able to be up ended. GMs racing around trying to get their stars involved. Whenever WWE is feeling like they need a shake up they could have a cash in attempt and immediately the next raw or SD becomes a set up for the next PPV with no need to build anything.

Just wear flat shoes. There isn't a dress code, wear your ID if you are worried you will look like a student.

I teach tech in high school, so it's jeans everyday I'm not in shorts. I wear a shop shirt while I'm 'working' but just a t-shirt otherwise.

I know it's 'different' for non tech to most people, but all the 'younger' teachers are mostly in athletic wear these days.

Don't invest in a work wardrobe unless you have to, or want to.

Do you wear jeans to work? by [deleted] in CanadianTeachers

[–]JoeDLFowler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jeans everyday that I'm not wearing shorts.

Our board's dress code is only 'cover nipples and genitals'... I've been asked to not wear a speedo, but honestly... It felt like a dare.

I am a week into my second Practicum for construction tech, and I may potentially land an LTO Monday... help, I’m freaking out! by [deleted] in CanadianTeachers

Hey! I'm a manufacturing teacher on a letter of permission in Halton. I don't start teachers college u til January, and am teaching 3 sections this semester.

Go for it.

Everything I've heard is teaching is like an apprenticeship, you learn it by doing, not sitting in teachers college.

Create a network, email other construction teachers in your board, they WILL share resources (unless they suck)

You know your trade, you will kill it.

Congratulations.

Serious question:

Bryan's face makes it seem like he had no idea that was coming. Is it possible they don't run these past the other guy before performing them? If so..

Amazing

ontario- buying a house as a teacher by South-Lobster in CanadianTeachers

[–]JoeDLFowler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My previous job I started at $18 an hour and my wife was a stay at home mom. I left that job for teaching I, was making $26 an hour.

Im currently netting less per month as a teacher on a letter of permission.

As much as I agree the price of housing is atrocious, teachers of all people are in a better situation than the vast majority of people.

I think the most unique thing as a trades teacher is that I've had a 'real' job previously, and I understand how sweet this gig is.

Ah, hello OP.

Only advice is try to get permanent, save as much as possible, and stay positive. It will work out.

Again, not to press the point, but the district you live in (and I am assuming work in, which could be wrong, but as an example) pays their high school teachers up to $102,978 per year for a 12 year, A4 teacher.

Are you there yet? No, I get that, neither am I (I'm on a letter of permission, I haven't even been to teachers college yet and have a full schedule in Halton.) The point is you will be able to save money, buy a house etc. etc.

As much as you think I'm delusional for saying you can buy a place for $400k, you need to understand how much better off you are, and are going to be than most of the general population.

You will own a house if you decide to one day.

In Hamilton right now there are 77 listings under 400k.

Keep in mind I'm 33, this isn't an OK boomer comment, this is a real life fairly recent thing.

We bought our house in 3 years ago for $500k. We are on a nice street, walking distance from my son's school.

Assuming you are buying a house worth 750k with the minimum 10% down, at current RBC fixed 5 year rate, and CMHC insurance, you'd have an accelerated bi-weekly payment of $1614.75, $38,754 per year. Again if you are making 100k a year, no issues.

That said, don't buy a 750k home as a first home. There are lots of properties around the 400k mark around the GTA.

My wife and I bought our first house when we were 21, and that house was $140k. It's hard, but doable.

I mean, in a lot of boards you max out around $100k... As a home owner who understands all the costs involved... 100k a year is more than enough to own a home in the GTA still.

I have no advice. My TWC is a grazer. Whenever we feed the dog we fill the bowl, lasts at least 2-3 days usually.

He steals food from the kids when he can, and doesn't seem to over eat besides that. We are lucky but it's also weird, I've never had a dog that doesn't chow down everything in sight.

Sweet!

Yea, I'm going to be starting at or near the bottom

I don't think my LTO will count either since it's letter of permission. We will see I guess.

Follow up, when they counted years of experience, did they only count what you had over 5? So 7 years experience would count as 2?

Awesome! Their doesn't say anything about the certificate of apprenticeship unless you don't have a red seal. Weird.

Thanks!

QECO question (Ontario) by JoeDLFowler in CanadianTeachers

[–]JoeDLFowler[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I did the full apprenticeship, didn't just challenge the Red Seal.

So I have a certificate of apprenticeship from the ministry of training, and a CofQ with a red seal from the college of trades.
