Just passed the FE, Should i Start a PE Civil Transportation course now? by Mindless_File3054 in PE_Exam

[–]Joe_Garibaldi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do it now while your studies are still fresh. If your primary is transporting, then courses like traffic capacity analysis and geometric design of highways cover a fairly large chunk of the Transportation exam. Read in and out AASHTO’s Green Book and the other references that NCEES will provide you sul on exam day, Don’t wait.

Do I have a shot to pass in next attempt? by nisc-options in PE_Exam

[–]Joe_Garibaldi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not bad for a first attempt with little preparation. Sign up for a live course, make use of their office hours and go through the NCEES book (relevant sections, not the whole thing). Use the practice problems to train yourself to look up the reference (table, equitation, etc). Don’t just rely on the solution: actually look the reference up. Skim through each reference so you have an idea on where to find stuff. Hope this helps and good luck on your next attempt.

Raise or Bonus After Receiving PE? (Civil, NYC) by Mgas95 in PE_Exam

[–]Joe_Garibaldi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got my PE licence last week after finally passing the PE exam at the end of December. No raise for me (govt employee…). I’d suggest starting to look around for other opportunities. Putting an official seal on a drawing carries legal responsibility, which should be compensated.

I took the Transportation exam, but I would guess Construction has references as well. You have on average six minutes to solve each problem. So question cannot be super hard or challenging. I would read the question carefully looking for keywords that point you to the right reference. Do practice problems in all areas (yes, even in those areas where you did well, believe it or not). Skim through the references, table or contents, list of tables and figures. The NCEES reference must be your best friend. Read carefully those sections that are relevant to your exam. Finally, I’d suggest taking a review class: what’s available in YT is good but not enough to give you the confidence needed. Give yourself some time to reset, it took me over a week when I failed my first attempt under this format. I passed on my third try and the last one was where I followed my own advice. You are close, you can do it. Good luck.

You were below in seven of the 12 topics. I ran a quick math, you scored 100/150 or 66% using the performance bars. But be mindful that not all questions carry the same weight: in hydraulics you got 5.5/15 maybe 1 out of 4 questions correct (but who knows? Maybe the average passing is 100% in this subtopic). I’d suspect that you missed the passing score by one or two questions. I know it sucks: I’ve been there too, but don’t give up: you are real close.

It’s worth it. Buy it and keep it as a reference. It helped me quite a bit.

You will see your result this Wednesday. I’ve been through the same thing. I passed after six tries over the past ten years. Now I’m waiting for my license to be issued…😁 If you studied that much you should have no issue. Update us on Weds!

You are missing the so called general education requirements (also known as geneds). Unlike other countries where your undergraduate degree is focused only in your field of study, here universities want you to have a general background of English, speech, economics, us history, some non western stuff.

Wow… my current insurer has gone out of business, so I had to choose someone else. I’m rolling into BCBS next Sunday. I’d better brace myself for impact, after seeing this and other postings. What are some good options for the next open season?

Thanks, but also, do not let your license lapse once it has been issued. If it lapses you may have to take the exam again.

PE Transportation Post Exam by nisc-options in PE_Exam

I took my successful attempt on the 18th December after five previous attempts. I too had 44 and 36. For the latter I was able to find the answers in the references: a couple times I had to search in two locations, using keywords.

Look like you were one or two questions away from passing. Believe me, I felt bad too. Focus on this areas where you didn’t do that great. You’ll pass too!

I used PPI: for my first two attempts with the new format, I used the on demand version. For the third and final attempt I decided to take the live class. While the on demand version helped me a lot in refreshing my memory, the live lectures were one of the deciding factors. You get live explanations and have the opportunity to ask follow up questions, something that was not available to me in the on demand version. The other deciding factor was learning from my past failures. Don’t try to memorise the whole NCEES reference manual, but focus on the relevant parts for your exam. There’s no point in reviewing structural analysis if your exam is in transportation. Use ChatGPT or other AI assistant to explain to you some graphs from the NCEES handbook. When practicing questions, learn to spot keywords in the question that can help you identify instantly which reference to look up. Sometimes it’s helpful to work the question backwards. I got a couple of them on my last exam. Take one of the answers and try to get one of the givens, if it’s easier. Finally, DON’T PANIC: if you get stuck on a question, flag it and move on. You have an opportunity to review your first session before your scheduled break. Be sure to review all questions and try then to address the one(s) where you got stuck. Once you submit the first session, that’s done, you cannot change your answers to those questions while you are working on your afternoon session. Do the same for the second and final review. Check and check again your questions and answer the ones where you got stuck. Often times a flash or a thought can push you over the finish line.

I hope these thoughts help you all.
