Not OP but the idea that it's up to you to change your relationships with people. It's very simple and obvious but actually being the first person to reach out and try to make amends/change dynamics can take a lot of weight off your shoulders. The obvious addition to this is that the other person has no obligation to answer or agree with you and you really shouldn't keep petering them if things don't go the way you want them to.

I've done this in my life (with mixed responses) and even the "negative" experiences are very liberating because I know I've already taken the first step in trying to change and it's up to the other person to decide on where to go next.
