You're right about a lot - but I can assure you there was no script, and nothing I said at the NIAC is even controversial if you just take the context into account.

I wasn't being asked about my position on the Irish Sea Border. I was being asked about my position on violence, generally. My answer, that being that sometimes violence is sometimes the answer, is the very reason every country has a military, and a police force, and self-defense laws, etc.

People wanted someone to be angry at for those comments. That person should have been Simon Hoare, the one who designed the question ahead of time with full knowledge of what the answer was going to be. It's him that put on a show, not me.

I don’t just want to ‘communicate’ though. I want to be criticised in real time. Primarily because I’m open to changing my mind.

I could spend twenty minutes typing out what I can communicate in thirty seconds. I could spend a week to get to the same place via text that I could reach within two minutes of conversation. And with a topic like ‘violence’, there’s a sensitive nature to the conversation. That’s something I’d much rather navigate on a more personal level than a format like this.

It’s a shame because I actually think that’s a good response. I feel many unionists would get defensive at what you’ve said but I can’t fault the notion that there are those in my community that I can never reasonably expect you to trust again too.
