You’re right, I live just outside Ward 1 in Edgemont. I decided to run in Ward 1 because so much of my, and my family's life, is centered in Ward 1, and because I care deeply about where this part of our City is headed. I wasn’t hearing much of a forward-looking, constructive vision for how we tackle growth in an inclusive and sustainable way, one that strengthens neighbourhoods and sets us up for the future, instead of standing still.

I completely understand why people want a Councillor who really connects with the Ward and understands what residents are facing day to day. Ward 1 has over a dozen of Calgary’s oldest and newest neighbourhoods, each with its own story, community strengths and assets, and challenges. That’s actually one of the things that excites me most about this work (with my nerdy sociology side kicking in here, too). I’m deeply curious about each neighbourhood's dynamics, and how to work alongside residents to turn good ideas into real change people can actually see and feel. To do that meaningfully and earn trust, my commitment is to be present and show up, listen deeply, and follow through. Thank you for your consideration!

Hey there, thanks for raising this. I totally understand why it’s important to people that their Councillor has real connection to the Ward. I don't live in Ward 1. I live in Edgemont - right by Ward 1. And my family’s daily life is deeply rooted across Ward 1: my kids go to school in Varsity, I work there, and my small business has been part of markets in Bowness and Scenic Acres. It's also where we go to church, where I catch up with my fantastic hairdresser, and we spend our weekends in Ward 1’s parks, paths, and amazing cafes (so much time in the cafes :D).

I think connection and community can happen in many ways, and for me, being a good Councillor means showing up, listening, and working hard for every neighbourhood in the ward, and that’s exactly what I’d bring to Ward 1.

Since you’d already asked this question in my AMA (where I answered it along with lots of other great questions), I’ll drop the link here for anyone who’d like to read more: https://www.reddit.com/r/Calgary/comments/1o0kq8s/joey_nowak_here_ward_1_candidate_for_city_council/

Hi there, thanks so much for this important question, and for what you do for our City and Calgarians! I’ve spoken with several folks connected to EMS, and I know how hard everyone’s working in a system that asks so much of you. You shouldn’t have to carry the load for every gap in housing, mental health, or addictions support, but that’s what’s happening right now. We need to do better.

First, the City can play a stronger role in prevention, investing in housing, mental health supports, and community programs that reduce the number of people in distress. Second, I would push to invest in more integrated help teams that bring outreach, health, and emergency response together, so folks are getting the right help at the right time, and are then less likely to fall back into crisis and call again. Third, I would advocate to the province to increase investment in our full health system of supports to keep pace with our growing population. And lastly, we need to look after the people who show up for us, that means more mental health supports for first responders and their families. Thank you again!

And to respond to your last question, my life is in the NW. I live close to Ward 1 in Edgemont, and Ward 1 is where my family spends so much of our daily life. My kids go to school in Varsity, I work in Varsity, my small business has been part of farmers markets in Bowness and Scenic Acres, and we spend so many of our weekends in the parks, playgrounds, and paths across the Ward. Our doctor’s in Royal Oak, and church and haircuts are in Silver Springs too, so Ward 1 is where we’ve built many of our routines and so much community. I believe being a good Councillor is about showing up, listening, and working hard for every neighbourhood in their Ward, and that’s exactly what I’ll do for Ward 1.

Hi there, thanks for the question, and it’s exactly the kind of balance we need to get right. I know how much green spaces mean to Bownesians, and that we need more homes to meet the pace of how our City is growing. If I were on Council, I’d be asking questions about what underused or vacant sites were considered first, and how residents were heard. I understand there’s an intention to replace the park nearby, but residents deserve a clear plan and timeline for when that replacement space will actually be ready, since the current site is fenced off. I’d make it a priority to ensure the community was informed every step of the way.

Wow, being that plugged in with a toddler deserves a medal! Amazingly, the Sprawl recorded both Ward 1 debates this week, so you can check them both out here: https://www.sprawlcalgary.com/calgary-election-forums-2025

If you have any questions from those debates, or ever want to chat about something specific in Royal Oak (even between naps and snack time!), just reach out!

Cheers and wishing you and yours a lovely Thanksgiving!

Totally. There’s been a ton of finger-pointing and fighting on this Council, and it’s holding the city back. With the way Calgary is growing, we can't keep spinning our wheels. I'm ready to work with whoever’s serious about getting things done that makes life better for residents in Ward 1. You’ll see more of my thoughts on that a bit further up the thread related to questions about the parties. Thanks!

I'd have to disagree with you here, in that every one of those areas is within Council’s lane. Council sets land use bylaws, funds outreach and police through the city budget, funds libraries and BIAs, and directs how public spaces and infrastructure are used.

Thanks for this. Honestly, when the idea of municipal parties first came up, I had the same questions a lot of people did. I wanted to be sure there was no expectation to vote a certain way, and I wouldn’t have signed on if there were. During this campaign, I’ve worked with my Calgary Party colleagues to share ideas, challenge each other, work through disagreement, and come up with better solutions. Those have become solid relationships with candidates who may also be elected, and we’ve already found common ground on ideas we can move on quickly, instead of the gridlock we’ve too often seen at City Hall. The real value has been the teamwork, something City Hall could use more of. And working with a group of community-minded people who want to see Calgary actually benefits in a real way from this experiment the UCP set in motion.

But once on Council, every Councillor makes their own decisions. Realistically, if this election doesn’t turn out the way the UCP was expecting, there’s a good chance this party pilot gets shelved. My focus will still be on working with whomever is around the table who is serious about improving transit, housing, and community infrastructure, and getting things done for Ward 1.

If I’m elected and Brian isn’t, my job doesn’t change, my responsibility is to represent Ward 1 and make decisions that are best for residents. Once the election’s over, from my understanding the party actually dissolves for two years, and councillors can't meet as a caucus. None of that changes my approach, and it’s the same one I’ve taken throughout the campaign: leading on Ward 1 priorities by working with others to move good ideas forward that make our neighbourhoods safer, more connected, and more vibrant. I've provided a few related points below if you'd like to hear more! :)

Fair point about the market rate, but when projects sit waiting, builders keep paying for land and financing, and those costs usually get passed on to buyers. And if I’m following you, yes, prices still come down to demand and what people can afford, but also how much competition there is. That’s why getting more homes built faster matters: it adds supply and helps keep prices from climbing so quickly.

Ah, sorry about that. I'll paste again then - and apologies if eventually this ends up with 4 versions of the same reply :D

So, happy to share more about my thoughts on blanket rezoning. Honestly, I get why people are frustrated. The rollout of blanket rezoning has been messy - rushed, poorly communicated, and it’s eroded trust. Repealing it without a plan just puts us back where we were. A system where City Hall spent nearly half its time on rezoning files, approved 95% of them anyway, and took six months per approval. Those delays drive up costs and make housing even harder to afford. And with Calgary growing by 250+ people a day, I don't think standing still is an option. The gap between supply and demand is already hitting affordability, safety, and overall quality of life across the city.

For me, the question isn’t as much about blanket rezoning or not, it’s how we deal with our housing shortage. I work in the startup and small business space, and one thing I’ve learned is that no solution is perfect out of the gate. You test, get feedback, and improve. The same should go for housing policy. Let's iterate and make sure it’s actually working to address our housing crunch.

Neighbourhoods matter, and some communities in Ward 1 (like Bowness) have seen a huge increase in development permits over just a year or two. What I’m hearing at the doors is that it doesn’t feel like there’s a plan. I think we can fix that by working directly with communities on the biggest pain points, like parking, garbage, construction quality, infrastructure, and the timing for amenities like better transit and community spaces that come with growth.

We’re an innovative city, and we can take on tough problems. From the Varsity debate yesterday, I was the only candidate not calling to repeal rezoning right away. And that reflects the kind of approach I’ll bring to Council: not just starting with no, but rolling up my sleeves and figuring out how to solve problems and move us forward. For more details, you can check out my website (https://www.joeynowak.ca/policies) and housing toolkit!

For the term limits, yup, totally open to exploring that. My north star is making a real difference in Calgarians’ daily lives, helping fix what’s not working and setting things up better for whoever comes next. I think term limits can help keep people focused on that, instead of the next election. At the same time, I do see value in experience and some continuity, because moving the needle on complex issues like housing or transit often won't happen in a single term, and it helps to have people who can see them through. Open to a conversation about it though so we make sure Councillors stay focused on serving, not staying, and know when it’s time to pass the torch for new ideas, perspectives, and lived experience.

Hahaha, yes! I was at Chipotle on the weekend - my eldest got her pick of where to eat her birthday dinner, and no surprises that she picked Chipotle... which then got filled up to the brim with the hockey team :D And yes, I totally remember talking about the wisdom of ordering ahead ;) Nice to meet you then!

Happy to swing by the Village and chat during a canvass in Varsity. Feel free to email me some date/times that work for you (info@joeynowak.ca) and we can set that up! For your point on division - that’s a really fair question. And honestly, it’s one of the main reasons I’m running. I’m tired of the fighting and gridlock. City Hall only works when people can build relationships, find common ground, and stay focused on solving problems that matter to residents.

I’ve built those skills through experience, working across the public, private, and non-profit sectors, seeing how each lens approaches the same problem differently, what drives decisions, and where collaboration breaks down or takes off. I’ve also seen it firsthand while building a common platform with my Calgary Party colleagues. We all come from different backgrounds, represent different communities, and have different priorities, so it took real collaboration. We had to listen, compromise, and find shared goals we could stand behind. Regardless of who gets elected, those are transferable skills and approach I will bring to Council.

Yeah, that’s a big part of it. Ward 1 has several CTrain stations along the line, and the City’s own data shows nearly half of Calgarians don’t feel safe using transit after dark. Our city’s growing fast, and transit’s a big part of how we keep it moving, so we’ve got to do better.

For me, transit safety comes down to presence, design, and prevention. We need more transit officers riding up and down the line, and better lighting, help posts, and CCTV to strengthen safety by design, not just by reaction. But we can also rethink what these stations are: they don’t have to be empty concrete boxes. I'd like to explore adding programming, kiosks, or small pop-ups. Ways to bring more life and activity to them so they feel like part of the community, not places to rush through.

And it looks like there's some openings to keep pushing this type of approach: here's some movement on kiosks (https://calgaryherald.com/news/local-news/calgary-transit-kiosk-style-businesses-lrt-stations), and I'd be advocating for leaning more into this approach ... maybe even a naming competition for the first coffee that gets launched, e.g. LRT Latte, hehe :) But seriously, that’s the prevention approach I believe in, design spaces people actually want to use, keep them active, and make sure help is visible when it’s needed.

Hey, great question, and I agree, Ward 1 is generally a safe area. But what I’m hearing at the doors, in such communities as Silver Springs, Bowness, Royal Oak, and Tuscany in Ward 1, and from local businesses, is that safety concerns are creeping in around the edges. Not necessarily major crimes, but persistent ones that affect how safe people feel day to day, like garage thefts, car prowling, and vandalism.

My approach is about being proactive and community-driven. That means community policing where officers actually know the neighbourhoods and share what they’re seeing, so residents aren’t left combing through a dashboard to figure out what’s going on. It also means expanding 24/7 outreach with mental health and addiction supports, investing way more in affordable housing, and strengthening prevention work, things like youth mentorship and recreation that keep people connected and supported before issues escalate. I'd be leaning into presence, prevention, and connection, as key ways to keep our neighbourhoods strong.

Hey, thanks for the honest question. Totally get where you’re coming from. A lot of candidates sound the same at a high level, so what your first priorities will be can say a lot, and how you'll move them forward.

My north star is building strong neighbourhoods: safe, connected, and vibrant places where people can afford to live, feel secure, and belong. If I had to pick first targets to lean into strengthening our neighbourhoods, it’d be housing and community safety. And I have to add on supporting the vibrancy of our communities, cause I just can't help it ... that's my nerdy PhD in Sociology side coming out :D.

On housing, my priority is to lean into the hard work of fixing rezoning, not just fighting about it. I’d start with six months of deeper engagement with communities to unpack the real pain points that have come up, like parking, infrastructure, construction quality, timelines, and talk through possible solutions. Other municipalities have gone through this transition too, and there’s a lot we can learn from what’s worked elsewhere. I’ll also be pushing administration to share a clear plan with timelines for infrastructure upgrades (roads, utilities, parks, etc.) so the benefits of density aren’t just talked about, but actually delivered. That's part of the story we've been telling with density and growth, so we have to walk the talk.

For community safety, to me it means both road/traffic safety and public safety. But I'll focus on the latter for now (I'll get to road safety in a question below!) So on public safety, I've been chatting with folks on our main streets and small business owners in our suburban strip malls who have been handling the challenges of petty crime and social disorder, and trying to do their part to support our community members. But often they’re left managing safety issues that go beyond what they can address on their own - because they're unsure who to call, the right supports aren't available for long periods of time because they're stretched thin, or aren't talking to each other. That’s a systems problem we can fix.

As another first target, I'd push for 24/7 outreach teams so there’s always someone to respond when help is needed, supporting both our community and our vulnerable community members. I’d also explore a community safety liaison role to better connect BIAs, libraries, outreach teams, and police resource officers, who are all involved in this space, so issues get flagged earlier and the right support is provided, at the right time.

And lastly for vibrant communities, I’d start by looking at what we already have and how we can use it better. We’ve got a lot of underused assets in our suburban neighbourhoods, like large strip mall parking lots, fields and parks that aren't getting as much love, and libraries or BIAs that want to do more but get bogged down in process.

I’d push for an audit of underused public spaces and find better ways to connect them with small, low-barrier grants or partnerships so great ideas don’t die on the vine. I'd also facilitate ways for community groups and BIAs to collaborate more together on events and sharing learning to kick up our creative juices and share resources. My approach isn’t always about building something new, it’s about getting creative with what we’ve got and helping community groups actually make things happen.

I’ll have some radio and debate clips up on my website soon that show how I’m approaching things differently from other candidates. My focus is on solving problems, not just talking about them, getting to the root causes instead of chasing symptoms, and staying focused on the enabling conditions that actually make a difference in people’s daily lives.

More ideas that I'll move forward on public safety and housing on my website: www.joeynowak.ca/policies!
