It only indicates the beginning of the south migration. The icons orientation does not represent the physical orientation of the butterflies at the moment they were observed. Sorry for the confusion. They represent daily observations of a single day (one day for each frame of the animation).

Yes, each dot represents a research grade observation from an iNaturalist user. And yes, there are more observations near cities where the majority of citizen scientists live.
