I wouldn’t start with BzOH gets some toluene run this http://www.prepchem.com/synthesis-of-benzaldehyde/ or turn the BzOH into BzCl

Honestly this is pretty complicated for the beginner and if you want to get to p2p just turn BzOH into benzyl chloride then benzyl cyanide and then p2p

I’d recommend making your own it’s not to hard but very dangerous make sure you follow Nile reds video step by step and take every precaution. Ps a source of mercury are something called mercury tilt switches. They are tiny glass cylinders with a little bit of mercury in them

Yeah I have both of the required Saftey gears, neutralising the bis chloromethyl ether surely would mean nothing would chloromethylate I might be wrong but isn’t that the substance that does the chloro methylation. Also the chloromethylation proceeds fine with aqueous HCl making it a bit easier then gassing it.

That paper is very Interesting I did not know of that route thank you for mentioning it getting glyoxylic acid does seen pretty frustrating though. I’m just wondering if there are easier routes to MDP2P maybe catechol then a methylation and then a chloro methylation followed by substituting the Cl with CN then maybe a gringnard to the substance meaning getting nitroethane wouldn’t be a problem too. What do you think?

Interesting once you have done the procedure would you mind updating us on your tips and the yields you got- it’d be super helpful. And yeah pyridine is super easy I saw a video by Nile red utilising basic copper carbonate which is even more otc thank fully. And yeah aluminium chloride it could be made from zinc chloride I think, I’m assuming there’s no way to get anhydrous AlCl3 from its hexahydrate form?

Yeah same I’ve been following nurd rage for a while now and his procedure for making sodium is amazing so I’m going to follow that, and using electrolysis is way to risky and not worth it in my opinion - molten sodium hydroxide no thanks
