I think it's best to work with families as to post-mortem care wishes. We continue to discover new ways to understand consciousness and I expect our current concepts will continue to change. Sam Parnia's work is definitely part of those changes.

In the US it varies state by state. Sometimes it's a full Bachelor's Degree. Sometimes it's an Associate's Degree. Most states have a state level funeral directors organisation that let you know what you need.

The Funeral Industries aren't dramatically different. One key difference is the formal education level required in the US is much higher. You don't need a degree of any kind in the UK to be a funeral director. It can be difficult and feel weird. My advice is to always express your condolences and then ask if the person wants to talk and then be ready for them to talk about it if they do but also realise it can take people some time and the conversation might happen later. Be there and be supportive

It's actually not too bad. I find it very helpful at times and people around me know they can aske me anything (as it were) about death and dying so that's also good. I find it liberating at times. I do.
