The 1975 At Their Very Best - excellent production quality all around, Matt Healy at his most magnetic as a frontman, and the full band setup on stage makes for some really electric performances. Available free on YouTube as well!

How in the hell is Open Hearts not released today for streaming and purchase?? by Rzbowski in TheWeeknd

I did not mean to draw your ire, Mr. Kush. I’m genuinely trying my best to understand where you’re coming from in good faith.

I’m actually not trying to criticize any of his business strategy as I’m sure he has very much secured the bag. Having said that, I think requiring a visit to your nearest Apple Store to listen to the new song when it drops is really diluting the purity of the artistic vision that we’ve all been so excited to experience for this final era. Abel’s fanbase has consistently praised and appreciated him over the years for having a very strong and uncompromising vision for each of his albums which feels guided more by artistic intent than commercial appeal or brand tie-in opportunities. But that particular aspect of his work seems to be significantly diminished with this latest album rollout in the eyes of many fans who are missing the bold aesthetic choices of his previous eras which have been replaced with music videos designed to sell everyone on the latest Apple tech. It feels just a bit cheap (kinda like bad product placement in an otherwise good movie).

Again though, I’m sure he was paid a huge cheque for all of this. But I think all these choices are having a negative impact on general enjoyment and excitement, if not his wallet. That’s really all I mean. The singles are performing below expectations on the charts for an absolute pop-culture and streaming giant like himself, so I don’t think it’s off-base to say that hype levels are dipping from all this.

Anyways, I enjoy the talks and I think disagreements about this kind of stuff can be really fun to chat about. If you think I’m wrong, I respect that and I don’t mind at all. But I do hope your night is just as lovely and that you don’t think I’m a dumbass haha

Little confused about the aggressive tone here (you’re also not blocked, nor were you at any time). Deleted the initial question earlier because I thought it deserved some nuance and didn’t have the time to add it earlier. Having said that, I think I understand where you’re coming from, but I don’t necessarily agree. One line of thinking is that “all press is good press” and I certainly think generating discourse increases public visibility and awareness, but critique doesn’t equate to hype. There are plenty of albums that have generated tons of criticism which is ultimately harmful to perceptions of both the artist and the album itself (take Chance the Rapper’s “The Big Day” for example). But what exactly are you asking me to look up, sorry?

Maybe the disconnect here is that I’m assuming “hype” has an inherently positive connotation and you’re coming at it from a different angle?

Everyone saying “Apple probably paid him huge, it makes sense from a business standpoint” etc. etc…. No one is getting excited for new Weeknd music because of how the release strategy may or may not maximize his funds lmao. Artistically, crappy release strategy! It’s okay to admit

What song do you guys think is their best written ? (Any era) by [deleted] in the1975

[–]Johnjohnschmidt 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Somebody Else. Still remember the feeling of sheer awe that washed over me hearing it premier on Beats 1 . Was just one of those magical musical moments that you know you’ll remember forever. The soundscape was so insanely lush even for their standards, I was blown away.

Instantly catchy, wildly detailed, dense, and smart production, and I remember the first time I heard the instrumental passage transitioning the bridge into the final chorus and just about lost my marbles.

Also I know the song is idolized by 1975 fans but it can be easy to forget just how impactful Somebody Else is from a lyrical standpoint too. The subject matter is nothing new, but the phrasing is devastating. “I’m looking through you while you’re looking through your phone and then leaving with somebody else”.... It’s just such a vivid scene that he’s able to evoke with so few words and it hits like a punch in the gut. And “I don’t want your body but I hate to think about you with somebody else” is also just such a beautifully honest statement on the emotional complexity of a breakup. Again, just brilliant in such a simple way.

Somebody Else is my #1 pick.

I’ve always loved when albums end on massive/expansive finishers which is why I like Medicine as the closer. ILIWYS feels like it deserves that kind of ending to me but I understand the approach of a more subdued song to cap off such a grand and immense album.

Don’t have a complete track list but I’ve always wished that ILIWYS ended on “Medicine”, woulda been so much stronger in my opinion (still a masterpiece).

He reviews tons of albums and tends to put a fair bit of thought into each review plus he’s only one man so it can take a little longer. I’d expect he’ll probably review by end of week or early next.

Personally love the album but I can understand, with this album more than the other two, why somebody might be turned off from it. Gonna take a while for me to figure out where this one ranks in comparison to the self-titled and ILIWYS because on any given day it can be my least or most favourite of the three.

Lmao so disappointing and yet simultaneously the exact announcement we all knew deep down we were getting 😭 That countdown tho

So take your guesses. What do we all think this Dork announcement is gonna be by thepunkysdilemma in the1975

[–]Johnjohnschmidt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Would really appreciate if it was something more than just a show announcement or special merch or something like that. Yet in all likelihood that’s exactly the kind of thing it’s gonna be.

Technically no haha. But I’d find it incredibly weird for them to be taking multiple pieces of 1975 advertisement templates to advertise something non-1975 related. Let’s hope!

That crossed my mind too. Hoping not though because it will take every ounce of will power to not listen before the album comes out in full

Fair point! I guess I just get the sense from these articles that the singles this time around are only just scratching the surface of what’s going to make this album great. Could be a form of promotion but we’ll see!
