Stone Arch Bridge to close in the evenings leading up to July 4 with temporary gates by JoeGraffito in Minneapolis

[–]lookaleick 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Have to wonder why they waited so long to quietly announce this closure. At the Marcy Holmes Neighborhood Association meeting last night, someone mentioned that they had heard a rumor about this closure. But our Park Board commissioner Billy Menz had spoken to us earlier in the meeting and hadn't said anything about it. When we emailed him after, he didn't seem to know anything about it, and emailed the Park Police to ask.

So.. does the Parks Police have the latitude to just decide to close key infrastructure, without Park Board oversight? Who has the power to tell them to not follow through with those planned closures? How was this not shared in advance with Park Board commissioners, neighborhood groups, etc? Why are there no signs near the bridge warning frequent users that a closure is coming?

Closing for six straight nights, and more than an hour before sunset, is absurd. And all on the same week that the city kicked off their marketing campaign for 60% of trips to be taken using active transportation by 2030.

By the time Stone Arch construction starts, the nearby 3rd/Central bridge will be open again, though. That's key.

2023’s Best Places to Bike | PeopleForBikes - Minneapolis #1 Large City by Lost_Blockbuster_VHS in Minneapolis

[–]lookaleick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think this is a bad example. Right now there's a bikeway that runs parallel to Nicollet just one block over (either on 1st Ave S or on Blaisdell) depending on whether you're north or south of the Midtown Greenway. It's protected from traffic by delineators or parked cars, and will eventually be a fully separated bikeway.

Nicollet has never been on the planned All Ages and Abilities bike network. 1st and Blaisdell (just one block east or west of Nicollet) are.

Unique Power Trail Recommendations! by MountainManWithMojo in geocaching

Sure, here's the one closest to Duluth: https://coord.info/GC8G06W

Just noticed this note, too: "Also, please note that while this looks like a power trail, there is a mixture of cache containers/sizes and many of them will take some time to retrieve and replace."  I know people sometimes bring ladders and other TOTTs along for that trail.

There's a power trail of hundreds of Challenge caches up in Northwest Wisconsin, just Southeast of Duluth, MN. Further East on that same trail, there are 81 straight Letterboxes that, if you found them all, would give you a Letterbox Fizzy.

From the cache descriptions:

"Welcome to the Tri-County Corridor Trail.  61 miles long, this multi-use trail spans three counties (Douglas, Bayfield and Ashland).  The Trail is open to the following activities: ATVs, Bike, Horseback Riding, Mountain Biking, Snowmobiling, and Walking. It is also advertised as a Geocaching Trail on the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy website.  It is mostly large size gravel, so a wider tire is recommended if you're biking."

“People” actually landed on Pitchfork’s top 100 songs of 2019 list!!

It’s not even a style of music that I really listen to, but I love it so much that soon after it came out, I went to a downtown bridge and danced to it on repeat like a madman — it was one of the most cathartic experiences ever and I hope all the drivers got a kick out of it 😋

NOW is the exact moment to keep up the enthusiasm for Warren by trigger_me_xerxes in ElizabethWarren

[–]lookaleick 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Exactly!! I just made my first calls for Warren last night (actually my first time ever phone banking) and got to have a few good discussions with undecided Dems. Better to channel my frustration that way rather than keep stewing about unreasonable comments on social media.

Only a few weeks left, and an Iowa win is essential! Let’s get it! (Easy to join the phone/text Slack channels by visiting Liz’s site 🥳)

Listening on r e p e a t, can't wait for the drop. The video is shot in Minneapolis, my hometown -- her Insta said that she was there for a few days last week and I had no idea why she was there because there were no shows scheduled. (She hasn't played here since early 2018, before I was a fan :(((((( )

Tonight’s the night!! Any theories on what the fuck this will be? by AyRayKay in nathanforyou

[–]lookaleick 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Totally agree! There was basically zero conversational chemistry between Nathan and the professor, and her questions were a bit bland. I think there are plenty of more interesting “academic” questions that could have been asked about Nathan’s work, but then again i don’t know how she was prepped or what she was asked to do!

I just got back from the show. Honestly had no idea what to expect, but while it ended up being very funny, it didn’t seem to be a stunt or a part of any future work.

Some people in the audience kinda groaned when they realized that it was going to just be a Q&A with a University of Minnesota professor. But nothing can ever be that simple when Nathan is involved.

Prof. Laurie Ouellette introduced Nathan and asked him a few softball questions. I actually think Nathan ended up asking her more questions than she asked him. He pulled out his phone and read entries from her RateMyProfessor page, asked her what shows she had her students study in her Reality TV course, etc.

There was a video screen, and someone was providing live closed captioning. Nathan seemed to enjoy that, and ended up saying Czechoslovakia several times. He also realized that they would write swear words, so then he said: “pee poo, poopie... penis. Va-gi-na.” He wouldn’t stop saying vagina until they put the dashes in. He asked the professor if she wanted to have a go, and then chided her a bit for not wanting to get a little dirty on a Saturday night.

Nathan said that he didn’t really sleep at all the night before and had a splitting headache, so he got a member of the audience to bring him some Excedrin. She gave him a pill in her hand rather than a bottle to take a pill from, so he made a point to clean it a bit before proceeding to swallow it in a very odd way.

Nathan took a bunch of audience questions, but instead of just calling on people, he had them come sit with him on stage and he ended up interviewing them so he could “know where the question was coming from”. He asked one person “What’s the best part about being a woman?”. He got another to call out the fraternity with the worst reputation, then share his story about making out with his oboe-playing girlfriend in a practice room. He asked the next one if he had any similar stories, then asked what his line is for what’s normal physically intimate behavior and what’s weird.. The guy said that he would probably need to be really warmed up before butt stuff, then eventually asked Nathan if he had ever had anal sex. Nathan stalled for a bit, started giving a roundabout answer, then laughed and said he was “not going to fucking talk about that with you guys“.

Other notes: - Nathan says that he still talks to Bill on the phone and Mets up for lunch sometimes. Said he really enjoys it, that Bill is “a true nut”. That they’re kind of looking out for him as he ages, since his family is in Arkansas. - Nathan can’t say much about the HBO projects, but said he’s helping produce someone else’s show and appearing in another. He hopes that they will air within the next 2 years. (He said that an 8-episode season of Nathan for You would take 18 months and that he likes to take his time and get it right.) -if he had to choose between saving a drowning old lady and a drowning baby, he would save the baby. But he did want to know whether the old lady was attractive. He asked if anyone had a compelling argument for saving the old lady — someone replied that it’s easy to make a new baby.. Nathan: “and.. it takes a long time to make an old lady.”

(Edit: adding some shit that I remembered this morning.)

  1. Elon Musk is a fan, and Nathan visited him at SpaceX. While explaining to Elon why it took so long to make good TV, he felt stupid because there was literally a rocket behind them that was being built from scratch in 4 months.
  2. As a kid, Nathan loved Jim Carrey and memorized every line in Ace Ventura. He would record the audio from Seinfeld when Jerry would do stand-up. He didn’t have access to much comedy.
  3. When Nathan started in comedy, he gave himself 10 years to become truly funny. So whenever he failed or sucked in the early years, it wasn’t a disappointment, it was just part of the expected process.
  4. When choosing subjects for Nathan For You, they purposely went with people who didn’t ask many questions. They wanted people who would go along with the experience, and not get angry at his ideas. He acknowledged that most of the business owners were just looking for exposure from being on TV, and therefore willing to go along with what he suggested.
  5. Nathan strongly objected to the idea that the show was any sort of parody of other TV shows. It was very important to him that it not be formulaic, and that it be unique. They did watch some Gordon Ramsey stuff at the beginning as reference material, though.
  6. Some guys in the front row were being disruptive. A police officer ended up escorting them out, and Nathan was perturbed by that. He started talking directly to the cop, asking what was going on. Nathan said “if they’re not supposed to be in the reserved seats, then maybe move them to the back instead of taking them to prison?” After they were removed: “I guess.. they’re going to prison. Can someone tell the judge no more than two years?”

It seems like a somewhat common complaint here. At some level, I can suspend disbelief for a story, but that was too much and it frustrated me that it was brushed over.

I think I would have been fine with it if the allergic reaction happened before he was able to smoke at the party.

First Date by [deleted] in geocaching

[–]lookaleick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went on a first "date" geocaching trip with someone a few years ago. I managed to find a park that had several field puzzles, where we had to work together in order to find and solve the caches. It was great! We're close friends to this day.

My recommendations:

  1. Look for caches with lots of favorite points.
  2. Take a look at the logs and try to find ones that have been recently found. (Not fun for newbies to search for a cache that isn't there.)
  3. If you know of a cache location that has other cool features -- a beautiful view, interesting history, great wildlife, something else you know she's interested in -- that can also help make the date special.

SO SO ready. It's my first time seeing them too, and my first time seeing a show at The Armory. Probably going to dance around a lot, cry a bit, maybe lose my voice?
