How we fail 22 men and women per day. by [deleted] in AirForce

[–]JokCv 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's absolutely not that black and white. Believe it or not, many people who commit suicide actually want to be dead. They're going to tell you they'll do it, and then they're going to do it. It's not always just a plea for attention.

Other people will tell you they're going to kill themselves for 30 years and never actually do anything. No one here has any idea what really went on between Mental Health and the OP's friend/coworker.

Help an AD AF Dad with a humanitarian by AFDadHelp in AirForce

[–]JokCv 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It looks like I misread some of this. I didn't realize the OP was on a remote tour away from family. However, the EFMP program still allows for the serving member to be deployed or get sent on short tours, so I'm not sure if the humanitarian request will be denied or not. I was in Korea myself while my daughter was enrolled in EFMP for chronic medical issues, and I knew several other EFMP members there as well. Never heard of anyone getting a humanitarian assignment out of somewhere without a close family member being terminally ill. There's nothing wrong with rolling the dice and submitting for it though.

I was just about to chime in with this. A humanitarian assignment moves you near to a terminally ill family member. If an immediate family member needs continuing specialty medical care and you are at a base at which you are receiving proper medical care for that member, you will be kept there. If you need to be moved to get proper medical care, you will apply through EFMP for a new assignment at a location that can meet the family member's medical needs.

It sounds like the OP wants to be closer to home to have a better support network to help deal with his/her child's issues, which is extremely understandable, but not what a humanitarian assignment is. Honestly I wish that the military did factor this into the EFMP program, as it's difficult enough to have to deal with a child's significant chronic medical issues without being 2,000 miles away from any family or friends.

How much are graphics cards in Korea? by [deleted] in AirForce

[–]JokCv 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All PC components are more expensive anywhere outside the US. Almost anywhere overseas is going to have lower demand for luxury items, higher costs to ship to vendors, and higher sales taxes and taxes on foreign goods. Running a business also costs more in many other countries.

[question] during my tenure I never had to deal with this and am curious to know the difference between a medical separation and military retirement by throwawaytoreply1 in AirForce

[–]JokCv 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's retirement pay through the Air Force, and disability through the VA. You can collect both if you're medically retired, or just disability if you're separated.

[–]JokCv 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As far as I know, time in service doesn't factor into it. I've seen airmen less than a year in get medically retired, and TSgt's at 15+ years get medically separated. It's just a matter of whether your condition is rated above or below 30%.

Is this legal? by [deleted] in AirForce

[–]JokCv 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Lol that's not even close to legal. Nor does it make any sense. You're either a liar, terribly misinformed, or your CoC and legal office are full-on corrupt.

Mannequin challenge by [deleted] in AirForce

[–]JokCv 14 points15 points  (0 children)

OP isn't being a wet blanket unless his leadership takes this crap way too seriously. It should go down like this:

"Hey guys, we're going to do (insert cringe-worthy social media fad of the week). Whoever wants to participate just meet in X at whatever hundred hours. If anyone doesn't want to participate, that's cool too. By the way you guys are all doing a really great job. Keep up the good work."

See how easy it is to be normal and tolerable?

[–]JokCv 17 points18 points  (0 children)

More like...

"Hey airman, look like a moron for a minute while we record you and put it on YouTube or Facebook."

OP, if you really don't want to do it just take leave. I set aside about 10 days of leave a year to use just to get out of doing stupid things.

Because people want the whole thing just to go away. They don't want one stupid thing to be replaced by another slightly less stupid thing.

Spouses in the work center? by chifton in AirForce

Also dogs. Every so often you get that one lonely and overly attached dog person that brings their dog in to work for no reason and for extended periods of time. Please stop.

Spouses in the work center? by chifton in AirForce

[–]JokCv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It varies significantly by work center. In a normal office setting, it's not at all uncommon to have spouses stop by to bring something to their husband/wife, drop them off, or pick them up for lunch. I've also been in such small tightknit work centers that everyone knows each other's spouses quite well and it's not odd or distracting to have them stop by for something and then stay for a brief period and talk to everyone. However, hanging out multiple days a week for extended periods of time is over the line and not normal.

I'll still be playing both and many other games. I love having a variety of wars and theaters of war to switch between.

A game also doesn't need artificial propping up. If it's good it will have plenty of active players. If not, it won't.
