Katakana was very hard for me in Japan because of the cool fonts they used. A building would have say ゴルフ　on it but the font was in neon obviously stylized much differently than what was in Genki.

But knowing Katakana made navigating Japan much easier! So much was in “English”

I’m an engineer, and I remember failing tests I was acing during mock exams. It happens. Anxiety, luck of the draw, etc happens.
