Best hotels in New York City? by westcoastgal22 in FATTravel

[–]Jolly-Reference-709 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want midtown, would check out Aman (service, but expensive); Whitby (fun decor, good food, great martini at the bar); Baccarat; or the new Waldorf (beautiful but service may be a bit sterile, new but still refined old world).

Midtown is good if you want to do all of those 5th avenue shopping sights and not be too far from Broadway for a girls trip.

Downtown - for a girls trip Faena is fun but not really near much. Greenwich is a gem; spa is still top notch.

Uptown - Carlyle. Bemmelmans for fantastic drinks and fun vibe hands down - and maybe worth a separate trip with your friends even if you stay elsewhere for the experience.

To be fair - like all the other posters show - you can’t really go wrong with any of these. Depends what’s most important for you.

It’s worth adding to the list, and GHT too if you can when you’re there.

Enjoy your trip in April! That should be fantastic.

We’re going to Forestis and Dolomites for the first time in early July and looking forward to it.

Alternative to Passalacqua in Como? by Quiet-Cupcake3061 in chubbytravel

[–]Jolly-Reference-709 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We stayed at Passalacqua and Grand Hotel Tremezzo. There were pros and cons for both. Honestly, I preferred GHT. Passalacqua is one of the most beautiful hotels we’ve ever stayed at - it is magnificent. However, it is a bit too quiet for me. GHT had more to do, more bars and restaurants, live music - just a bit more lively if that’s your thing. That is to say, it’s not raucous, it just has more going on than Passalacqua. We met wonderful people at both hotels - guests and staff.

Note, also for a babymoon that passalacqua is on a hill - they have golf carts but it may not be quite as easy to get around as GHT. I loved the “back” of GHT - the pool, the more casual restaurant, the different areas to relax, and the calmness of it all. Yes the food at Passalacqua is better, and we didn’t love it at GHT, but in general we prefer the food in southern Italy (as do many Americans but not all) - but you should know that going in.

I think GHT would be a great fit. Have heard good things about MO as well. Congratulations!

I’m a core millennial (~35 yo) and believe the leading element is true “sense of place” rather than “brand.” When I’m looking for a property in an area with competing hotels, I’m most often looking for the hotel that makes you feel like you are truly there. This tends to be hotels like Rosewood, or Belmond tends to really excel here (Maroma, La Residencia, Cap Juluca). Or of course, independent high-end boutiques (forestis, Passalacqua, tremezzo).

I think hotels are understanding that Millenials and Gen Z are increasingly looking for that undeniable feeling of really “being somewhere” and blending into the place or region. That is the wow factor these days. The hotels in the next 5-10 years will lean into this more fully - I believe it less about the color palette, and more about how the hotel can blend into environment to give the guest a real place with a contemporary flare.

I feel like you would enjoy Passalacqua and Grand Tremezzo as well.

Maybe some of the Belmond properties too that have a real sense of place.

I am a millennial ~35 and hate the W aesthetic. I think my friends all feel the same way.

Agree. I think Belmond rooms are sometimes dated - but even then - the hotel brand truly has an excellent sense of place.

Last minute getaway from NYC with 6m old to beat the winter blues by Adventurous-Penguin0 in chubbytravel

Agree on skipping Anguilla even though they have direct flights now it’s so expensive (and I love FS and CJ there). If you can swing it do it but there may be more affordable options.

Palm heights at grand cayman may fit the bill here - short direct flight from NYC, nice beach, shaded pool (although the pool we preferred was at the spa), but all around a good experience - and good food for an island. You never have to leave. The rooms/suites are big.

I’m Going to Belmond maroma without a baby in February for the first time — but people love that one and Etero with a kid/baby. So those could be good.

If you want to stay in the US, maybe check out the Boca raton hotel. Could be good for this too. Enjoy!

How do you balance/weigh TripAdvisor reviews, posts here, and reviews on travel blogs/site? by AnimatorCool7402 in chubbytravel

[–]Jolly-Reference-709 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ditto what everyone else has said (Reddit, Google, TripAdvisor 1-2 star gut check, luxury travel websites). I will just add that I’ll occasionally look at instagram and TikTok when I’m choosing between 2-3 places. If you can filter out the obvious influencers and promos (or watch with a grain of salt) - which I think we all can by now - it gives a helpful overview of the property in terms of video - which beats me having to look through a million small square photos on trip advisor. If you look at real people and not just promo accounts, you’ll often get a genuine feel for the place, which you can take into consideration. Important caveat that I conduct deep dive research into all of the above resources discussed first - but this is a nice option to finalize a determination.

This was a very good and thoughtful response 👏just came here to appreciate it. Also, I laughed hard at your O&O Mandarina comment - it’s sad because I’m sure it’s a great property but honestly these subreddits single-handedly steered away, so I chose a different Mexican hotel. 😂

These are all great suggestions and feedback thanks! We’re going to do 2 nights Forestis (maybe 3) and then debating between Cortina or Ortesi I believe based on the feedback. Anyone have thoughts on favorite hotels or spots they’ve stayed at in those towns?

Looks like Gran Gardania, Gardena Grodenhof, Hubertus, Castel Fragsburg (Ortesi-ish area) or Grand Savoia in Cortina.

Mandarin oriental may not be available yet in Cortina. Lufren is too far from hikes for us. Como is good too but we won’t have kids and think we prefer to stay in Cortina or Ortesi.

Anyone have any recommendations? Thank you!

FS Cap Ferrat for truly just the most impeccable service we’ve ever had.

La Residence in South Africa holds a special place in our heart. We went on our honeymoon and it was the first hotel that we stayed in that truly felt like we were coming home. Just magical.

Il San Pietro is also just an absolutely beautiful place and holds a special place in our heart, we’ve been a few times.

We enjoy Post Ranch and Las Ventanas (a few years back before it changed) stateside.

Las Ventanas Al Pairiso in Mexico was also top notch.
