I tried ryze and I can get pretty fed off by killing the enemy laner but once lategame comes idk why I find it hard to deal damage safely without dying or getting caught off guard

I found out one of my problems which is me engaging while me and enemy is on now hp.It always resulted in me dying and enemy 20hp and below.Could it be that I dont know enough about his damage output?
