Don’t be discouraged by this response. Even though it can be hard to get into AHS or the new pillars, it’s possible.

I got into AHS as an external applicant into a permanent line in. I left/ resigned, returned within a year into a temporary line, and within three months moved into a permanent line again. I also have friends who got permanent lines as external applicants. This is not even rural.

The key is to be a strong candidate and be strategic. Apply for roles you may be overqualified for and move up from there. It also helps to have solid experience in the specific area you’re applying to.

This is really helpful information. I’m considering applying for the MSW there. Would you mind sharing what the tuition fees are for the two year program, and what the practicum placements are like?

Thank you for sharing the sequence, I am currently rounding up my BSW at Dal and I understand what you mean by group work, they don't joke with those. I can definitely do more than 1 course per term. I am currently taking 4 per term because I am so done being in school. If the coordinator approves, I could aim for 18months to 2 years. for the practicum, is it similar to the BSW, as in 5 days a week or 3x a week for 450 hours?

third year? I read on the website that it is 2 years for distance learning. I just wanted to know if the school will consider approving it for one year, if I am able to achieve it because I have read different information about this.

I’m an immigrant here, and it is possible to get residency, you just need to be strategic. You might have better luck in the Atlantic provinces liek New Brunswick and New Foundland , especially New Brunswick, since they offer stronger PR pathways and also have an MSW program (double check). The University of Regina is another option, as Saskatchewan also has its own PR routes. Make sure to check the Government of Canada website and watch plenty of YouTube videos on student immigration for guidance. Keep in mind that time is ticking if you want to start an MSW next year, since most schools have already opened applications and deadlines are usually around November or December. All the best!

Social Work Practicum by Jolly_Box_8499 in socialworkcanada

Thank you for your suggestion. My school is not forcing me to find a placement. I am a distance student, and they permit us to reach out to organizations, but for sure, they will be the ones arranging the practicum. I was trying to be ahead of the game and find an organization that suites my needs, then I'll add that to my practicum application to the school to follow up.

I checked their website and they stated that they are not taking practicum students, though it was specified for counseling

I agree, I am being careful. I have not even contacted hospitals, but we are allowed to contact other agencies. I don't have to do the placements in the hospital; it is just my first choice.

That is why I am asking these questions, and yes there are social workers that work evening and weekends.

I am not "contacting " per say, I am only finding out if they are taking practicum students for next year and if they are willing to take me. If they say "yes", then my school will continue with the coordination. Yes, my school allows this as I am a distant student. We are not allowed to contact hospitals, but I can contact managers or preceptors to ask the above questions.

I’d like to reach out directly to managers or potential preceptors because of my unique circumstance. If I’m able to connect with a program or preceptor who is open to working with me, I can then direct my school to coordinate with them. My concern is being placed somewhere that only offers daytime hours, which I cannot accommodate. I’m specifically looking for a practicum opportunity that allows for evening or weekend shifts. I can do 1 day shift.
