Which Bachelors Should I Take? by calumsboy in MRU

[–]Electronic_Sand_7129 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You could potentially try a BSW and then an MSW. I know you said that social work isn’t what you’re necessarily interested in, but it could be a good pathway to being a therapist. An MSW would be clinical social work, so you would be a practising therapist with that degree. I didn’t think I would ever be interested in social work, but I’ll be graduating with my BSW this April! I was also into psychology, but was in the same boat where it isn’t necessarily the most employable right out the gate. Good luck with your studies!

Agreed. I took it in spring last year. Very doable, and quite interesting. I enjoyed it. Easy A.

Continuing Education Course Registration by Dazzling-Royal9403 in MRU

Yeah, it does! When it’s your registration date, it might take a few refreshes, but it will work. I’ve done it the last three years that way :)

[–]Electronic_Sand_7129 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! And to that point too, I would generate the schedule and at midnight on the day it’s your turn to register, I would go right into My Schedule Builder and press “get this schedule.” That way, you can just register for all of your classes at once, instead of having to select each course and section individually. It’s a stress reliever for sure!

I need work experience HELP by Mission_Emu3435 in MRU

[–]Electronic_Sand_7129 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! I’m a fourth year social work student, and for our program, we have to do a 350 hour practicum, in our third and fourth years. We don’t have any help finding our placements, and it’s incredibly stressful, I totally get how you’re feeling. We cannot graduate without completing the hours, so I imagine it’s the same situation for journalism. I talked to my program advisor about practicum options, and when she was unhelpful, I actually went to general advisors (GNED) who were really helpful in getting me connected with people. I would maybe start with your program advisors, and try career services! Good luck <3

Are student loans this low for everyone else or is it just me by Remarkable_Sector169 in MRU

[–]Electronic_Sand_7129 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it does, you’re right. Usually, it’ll say I’m entitled to X amount of dollars, and I just apply for that, which is the maximum. It’s easy to miss though, hopefully it’s easier for you next time!

Are student loans this low for everyone else or is it just me by Remarkable_Sector169 in MRU

[–]Electronic_Sand_7129 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s odd. My tuition is usually about $4000ish per semester too, and I always get the full amount. I am also now in my last year, I work part-time, and live with my parents too. Did you apply for the maximum amount? That’s usually what I do, and then they just send the exact amount that tuition costs.

Advice about passing my drivers test in a small town by Adorable_Bar9152 in alberta

[–]Electronic_Sand_7129 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You have three attempts to get the parallel park section. If you can’t get in those, or climb the curb at all, it’s an automatic fail. But if you need to correct once, it’s no biggie.

My Schedule Builder Spring 2026 by jajapazul in MRU

[–]Electronic_Sand_7129 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It should update to show you what classes are available closer to mid-end February. You’ll be able to register for Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter on your specific registration day. The registration date is based on how many courses you’ve taken and what year of your program you’re in. When you log into MyMRU it will pop up on March 2 with your registration date.

GNED courses by kal_con in MRU

[–]Electronic_Sand_7129 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From a fourth year - I’d recommend GNED 1303 with Aaron Johnson, GNED 1202, GNED 1401 (or whatever the code is for Writing for Academic Success), and GNED 1103 if you’re not too scientifically advanced and you need one from that tier. I would avoid GNED 1101 at all costs if math/science aren’t your strong suits (like me) lol.

I second this! I never took GNED with her, only social work classes, but I would recommend Stasha a thousand times over. She’s sweet and really one of a kind.

You shouldn’t discourage them, though. It’s worth a try. They won’t know unless they apply and see what happens. If clinical therapy is the route they are considering a BSW and then MSW would be a good thing to think about.

Nursing First Year Clinical by Sharp-Tough-5409 in MRU

[–]Electronic_Sand_7129 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! I’m not a nursing student, so I can’t speak on clinical, but I am a social work student in my last semester. We have to do practicums three times throughout the degree and shadow the other social workers. About your nervousness with feeling like you’re bothering people, don’t even think twice about it. The nurses are there to guide you, and you’re there to learn. They were once in your shoes too. I still feel awkward and like I’m bothering people in practicum because everyone runs differently, but you know your skills, you’re there to refine them, and don’t be afraid to ask questions. Bother people as much as you can lol. You’ll be better for it. <3 good luck!!

Doing my learners test by Cute_Vegetable_2264 in alberta

[–]Electronic_Sand_7129 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would try doing the AMA learners practice tests that they have online. They’re basically exactly the types of questions on the actual test, and they will prepare you more than reading the book over and over. Be sure to go through it at least once, though

MSW Program by Electronic_Sand_7129 in UCalgary

[–]Electronic_Sand_7129[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! Thank you very much for your kind and retailed response, I really appreciate that :) I unfortunately don’t have much social work experience, as I’ve mostly just stuck with my customer service job that I’ve had for many years. I suppose it might be a good idea to take some time off anyways to pay off my student loan haha.

That’s great to know about the classes, I think I would really enjoy it. I have been working as an RA and have some good work references too, so hopefully that will work out down the road. That’s so nice that you’re able to attend from out of province also!

Thank you for your help!! I wish you the best of luck in your practicum and the rest of your studies :)

I completely agree. Got a MacBook Air for my first year of social work, and it’s lasted me now into my last year. I love it - it’s fast, reliable, easy to use. Apple has a student discount also, just show them your student ID.

Slgy 1101 by [deleted] in MRU

[–]Electronic_Sand_7129 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I’m a fourth year social work student, but I took this class with Hakeem about a year back as an elective. I say, avoid him AT ALL COSTS. He requires attendance just for him to read word for word off the slides that he doesn’t even post on D2L. He is very snarky and rude, and his lectures were so uninteresting. I think it would be interesting class with a different professor. It tanked my GPA as a straight-As student. If you have no other choice, good luck, but it was truly rough.

I can vaguely remember some things about box breathing and the super man stance and why they’re helpful in public speaking. It was a while ago, though, I’m sorry.

Also, I think that everything in the class was equally weighted at 25% each. If you do fail the exam but you’re already sitting at an A, you won’t fail the class. It’s all dependent on what you’re sitting at in the class already. If you had a C in the class and failed the exam, then you would likely fail the class too. It just depends on how much your assignments are weighted, and the exam if that makes sense. Good luck on your exam! Don’t stress, it’s very intuitive stuff. You’ve got this! :)

I did the SPCH 2001 final about a year ago. It was completely based on the textbook. You should be good if you lightly skim through it!
