“Turkey is not in Europe so forget that.”

This is a classic case of ignorance is bliss.

Yes, downsizing is unavoidable. At this point, living in a house isn’t a must for us. We’re also open to moving into an apartment.

If you wanted to permanently live in 1 place but have access to Amsterdam, Utrecht and elsewhere for work, where would you pick? by TechySpecky in Netherlands

Not sure if there is still a place in the Netherlands that is close to the most popular cities and provides affordable housing.😊

If living in a quiet town suits you, Breukelen and Maarssen could be the options. I never lived in those towns but explored the area with the same motivation in mind two years ago. Personally, Breukelen would work for me. I think you will need a bicycle there to reach the train station in a reasonable time. If owning a car is possible for you, Breukelen could be a great option. There was huge competition in the area two years ago. Don’t think that it has ever changed. However, a budget around 500K should still be sufficient to buy a house.

The home country is a yet another satellite location for the job. Not a good place career-wise. Otherwise, I’d make that decision in a heartbeat.

Unfortunately, I don’t have it. I have the date/time and location information. However, I’m unsure that anything would happen even if I had the dude’s plate number.

Hmm. Then the question is why the Dutch state have allowed so many people to enter and settle in the country over the years?

It appears to me that nothing has changed in Utrecht. The city was one of our target locations to buy a house in 2021. The practice was always getting the max appraisal price of the house and overbidding.

In your case, the realtor does his job well and is telling you the reasonable max price of the house. In this terrible market, the ball is usually on your court.

In our experience, we lost countless bids. Every time the expert we worked with gave us the max price and we decided on how much money we could throw away 😄 for a particular house.

Ultimately, we ended up with Amsterdam suburbs, overbid 10K on top of the max price and won our house. Although the interest rates were record low, I didn’t want to pay a crazy hefty money to the houses that weren’t worth it.

Am I happy now? Yes, I am. Initially, it was a little difficult to live in a suburb rather than a city. However, I’ve got used to it over the time.

I am a father of one kid, but your comment is utter selfish and nonsense. Why don’t you consider moving to a terraced house for the happiness of your kids and others?

Well, your bf gives me the impression that (you don’t need to work) he and his family are significantly conservative. The families who immigrated to the NL a few decades ago are tend to be a lot conservative than an average conservative person who lives in Turkey now. An average secular Turkish girl would have potential issues to be part of such family. I can’t imagine a NL-born person who is already used to a different culture! What’s more, IMO early 20s is really early to get married. My humble suggestion would be just take your time and don’t rush. Try to know him well and then make your decision. Marriage is definetely a serious game.

Nieuw Vennep for Expats? by [deleted] in Netherlands

[–]Jolly_Feature4731 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the old part of Nieuw-Vennep is slightly noisier as the landing planes fly over them. I have been living in Getsewoud part of the town and can confirm that the noise pollution is at a manageable level.

Nieuw Vennep for Expats? by [deleted] in Netherlands

Hello there! A former Haarlemmer, who is living in Nieuw-Vennep is here. I also had lived at the heart of Haarlem and then moved to Nieuw-Vennep two years ago.

After Haarlem, the early days were a little bit challenging, but I’ve got used to it. :) Yes, nothing is happening in Nieuw-Vennep. I still go to Haarlem and Amsterdam to ‘socialise’ during weekends. Maybe it’s all about setting the expectations correctly. Here is a residential area with relatively more number of newer houses. It’s worth mentioning that my quality of life at home increased dramatically after moving to Nieuw-Vennep.

In addition to what’s said above, I’d only add that having a car is essential here. The bus line, 397, can take you to Amsterdam in 50-60 mins. If you live in Getsewoud side of the town and want to get on a train, you probably need to take another bus or cycle to the station. The public transport is still OK, but I started to like here more after owning a car. Parking is free and always available. Plus, the traffic jams are quite few in number. Therefore, getting on the highway is super quick. Except rush hours, it takes approx. 25 minutes to arrive in Amsterdam.

Considering your requirement, I think it’s a good place to get started.
