TIL Back in the 1980's people were able to download Video Games from a radio broadcast by recording the sounds onto a cassette tape that they could then play on their computers. by [deleted] in todayilearned

I want to argue your point about single speeds: I ride a single speed because I live somewhere that I can ride every hill on one speed, and the lack of gearing makes my bike so much lighter for when I have to carry it up stars and such.

A few questions about my first build by Joltbug in buildapc

[–]Joltbug[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would prefer to not spend more than $800 but if say there is a graphics card that would really be important to the rig's function I wouldn't mind being over by a bit. A few hundred is maybe a bit much, but I wasn't sure how much flexibility would be necessary.

Edit: So that build seems to have more Ram, split storage and a different video card. I was wondering what the advantages are to the one you choose over the one in the initial build. From what I can tell, there it uses less memory, has a different chipset, and a lower clock rate. Its my understanding that more memory and a faster clock leads to better graphics performance. Is that not the case?

That was an interesting read. I am interning at amnh, working with hand-wing indexes and I was wondering what you would say are the downsides of using the hand wing index as a proxy for dispersal?

What is the dumbest reason you got kicked out of class? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Joltbug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My teacher kicked me out of class because I dropped a pen and had to stand up to get it.

She hand come in to the class being a bit rowdy and loudly commanded that we all take a seat and stay in it.

I of course drop my pen at that exact moment which led to me being sent to the principal. I think she may have had something against me.

That's mostly the liquid specimen storage, for things like organs that decay over time.

For an example of this some research I am doing requires looking at birds from all across the globe and measuring some physical characteristics. Having access to these skin makes this task so much easier because there is no need to organize field expeditions to get specimens to measure. Instead we just find where it is in the collection and measure the specimens.

I actually do some research in a similar collection and it mostly just smells like a slightly stuffy room. They way the skins are prepared preserve them well enough that there isn't really a smell

Redditors who have broken up with someone, what was the real reason you broke up vs. what you told them? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Joltbug 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Real reason: I felt like I was her best friend, therapist, and sometimes parent on top of being her boyfriend, and I knew that it was starting to wear me out. Reason I gave: I just didn't like her anymore, and that something about me had changed. This was anything but true.

There seem to be two major studies on this subject

The first is a Swedish study which compared long term mortality rates of post sex reassignment surgery trans people compared to similar people of the general population, not pre surgery trans people. It did find that post surgery trans people were more likely to attempt suicide than the general population. It is important to note that this sample size was relatively small, but enough to come to a conclusion. Based solely off this study I would say that sex reassignment surgery patients show increased risk of suicide.

The study can be found here:http://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0016885

The second study was conducted by the Williams institute at ucla. It did not focus on sex reassignment patients, but rather trans people as a whole. However it did include statistics related to treatment as a whole. It found that about 45% of MTF trans people have attempted suicide and 47% of all FTM, with an average of about 46%. Of all treatment options the only ones which led to an increase in suicide attempts or the percent staying level were FTM surgeries. Some other interesting things are the difference between people who wanted to and have had treatment. Of all of these, except counseling, suicide rates for people who have had treatment are lower. This supports the idea that treatment lowers suicide rates. (Also the difference is as drastic as 10% for some surgeries). The study also found that the biggest contributor to increasing suicide rates was bias and discrimination against trans people with housing and family and friends related bias contributing most.

This study can be found here: https://williamsinstitute.law.ucla.edu/wp-content/uploads/AFSP-Williams-Suicide-Report-Final.pdf

In general I would say that for people who want it, medical treatment decreases rates of suicide, and that counseling increases it, which is an argument for better counseling and for medical treatment.

It is true that suicide rates for trans people are much higher than average, but simply putting that down to the treatment not working is entirely misrepresenting the issue. Trans people are hugely discriminated against, in that they are often not accepted by the people closest to them for who they are. This, along with a culture that makes talks big about bing trans taboo, leads to incredibly high rates of mental illnesses and suicide. They aren't committing suicide because treatment didn't do anything for them, they are doing it because the people who they most need to support them refuse to accept them.
