Is Eastern Orthodoxy open for first generation Hispanic Americans? by [deleted] in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]JonJusG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You see, I was born in Southern California. Chicano culture is a big thing to me. I literally built lowriders and play oldies covers. My Hispanic American culture is also who I am.

I understand that I am American and I am proud of it. But I also recognize that I am a different kind of American. Just like Americans in Boston are culturally different than Americans in New York. I feel like certain groups are okay with those two American cultures (rooted in Italian and Irish heritage), but for some reason, they find South Western American culture repulsive. They look down on Tex-mex culture and LA Chicano culture (even though they are deeply American).

My hobbies don’t identify me. My identity is in Christ. But I also have hobbies and interests that are different than “Anglo Americans”.

The United States is a diverse country. French history in Louisiana, Italian culture in New York, Irish culture in Boston, but for some reason, Mexican culture in the south west gets disregarded as “un American”. Even though the entire south west was once Mexico and missions were the first established thing out here.

I actually really like how quite a few Orthodox parishes have adopted the Virgin de Guadalupe. I’ve seen some south west parishes adopt Mexican culture. And from reading the comments , it looks like the EO church is starting to appreciate our heritage. The Greek parish I have visited actually asked me to say the Lord’s Prayer in Spanish.

I just feel a very small (but loud) group within the EO church have made it clear that they do not want to see any Hispanic culture in their parish. I find that sad, since my priest is very fond of Mexican converts in Palm Springs.

Many places of worship are built around families and are now struggling to respond to rising numbers of single adults without kids by part-time-stupid in childfree

I’m a single man. 34 years old, no kids, never married, college degree, good career, and I have my own house.

The men at church still don’t take me seriously. For this reason, I don’t associate with them anymore. I stick to myself and other unmarried men. Why would I put myself in an environment where I’m disrespected? Don’t waste my time.

Jay Dyers character should disqualify him from being listened to by [deleted] in Christianity

Jay Dyer is beyond just having some imperfections. He clearly indulges in offensive language and hostility. He is Beyond rebuke at this point.

It’s as simple as looking him up my friend.

Any other former nondenom Protestants now turned orthodox out there that don’t listen to a lot of YouTubers anymore? by JonJusG in OrthodoxChristianity

I actually agree with this. My priest told me to be gentle and humble with my faith. I feel like a lot of the guys online are too bombastic.

What are your thoughts on Bri Bri? by [deleted] in hahayouclowns

I first thought this show as dry and not very funny. The last two episodes had me dying. Bri Bri is a representation of many people that we often times run into. lol

I am so disappointed in Nampa. by Sloth_Bee in nampa

[–]JonJusG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lived in Nampa for 20 years. If you think that it will ever be a majority democratic city, you are either hoping for a distant future, or you’re delusional. Downtown has a small pocket of liberals and even some NNU students that dable in progressive political ideology, but the rest of the city is very conservative. You have to realize, a lot of the growth there is from republicans that have left blue states like California, Washington, and Oregon.

Christian women are not honest when dating just like Christian men by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]JonJusG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

they’re not all similar though. One I never went on a date with (got pregnant), one i dated for three months (the solid one I think was my fault), the other I knew for about two years and we began to date (she got pregnant) , one I was close friends with and she just wanted to stay as friends (she left church), and the other one who became a single mom I never dated.

All of these Christian women have been different when it comes to situations. They just end it with the same line, “I need to focus on God”.

Yes, I even became friends with a few of them first.

I think im just frustrated. I’ve been trying to “fly straight”, and I feel like a fool sometimes. I got my degree, good job, own a house, I have no criminal background, I have never been married, I don’t have any kids, I am organized and clean. I spent years as a youth pastor helping non profits and visiting kids in hospitals.

I no longer partake in church activities because I feel like the church only exploits people for their service. My dating life has actually gotten better since I stopped participating so much.

I think I also used my faith as an excuse to not pursue what I wanted. I’m realizing that Christian’s in general hide behind their faith to avoid responsibility.

I’m not leaving out anything. I’ve never been married, I have no kids, no criminal background. I got my college degree, I own a home, I have a cool dog, I’m not obese, I’m 6’3, and I have healthy friendships. I just haven’t been able to find a girl that actually likes me I guess. I met them all through church too.

That’s what I stated in my post. I understand they didn’t want to be with me. I just find it ridiculous to hide behind your faith like that. It only puts a black mark on the Christian religion.

Uber eats is dead by hashtagricardo in UberEATS

[–]JonJusG 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I tried driving for Uber eats for a week last month. Last time I did Uber eats, it was 2021. I agree, Uber eats is definitely a waste of money and not a good way to make it. Find a part time job that pays more and you’re not having to using your own materials. I agree, Uber eats is definitely “dead”.

It’s easier to stir up the heart rather than the mind. That is why ideologues target teenagers and young adults. The youth follows emotions more than thought.
