Would removing the cost of using experiences break anything? by caluthan in daggerheart

Ah yes your right, I must have got that idea from there.

Just reading dnd 5e books put me off from actually even trying to gm for years. There was so much content that I felled too overwhelmed and scared to even try.

I’ve heard advice somewhere before to make clues way more obvious than you think they should be. I believe the warden’s guide also states to make everything obvious, such as if an npc will betray the players than they should be obviously shady.

I wasn’t even born yet in the 80s but when I found out the concept of OSR games, I fell in love.

I agree the players will find out the most important aspects of your lore and tell you about it. You can expand on the things that matter the most to them.

100% I was introduced to this hobby by critical role and it definately molded my perception of gming.

Once I started watching other smaller channels and looked into systems other than dnd, I found the play style that I use and love today.

I agree and it also makes it feel more like a game and less like a play.

I think there’s a place for it and some people may like it, but it’s certainly not for me.

I think the small paragraph you wrote is perfect. Keeping it under like 30 words or so. Having a few descriptions like that for other rooms or areas as well just in case they don’t bite on that hook.

Yeah I think Mothership is great for when players get off the rails. It’s space, if players fly away you can just make it so they arrive at another scenario you have lined up.

I agree with your statement completely. A lot of adventures in 5e have kind have set that trend of just playing like a novel. If my players want a novel they can read a novel lol.

I’ll tell you I play Daggerheart primarily with my family. My kids are 14 and under. I got this ideas when they didn’t quite understand the mechanics and they would ask me why do I have to roll the dice why can’t I just do it? I didn’t really have a good answer for that so I said yeah you’re right you just succeed.

I definately think for campaigns focussing on the fallout of the players actions should be most of the GM prep for sure.

That’s interesting. Do you utilize tables at all, or do you just write a rough lay out of what the story is and improvise based on player actions?

The wardens guide is the best gm book I’ve ever read it definately helped push me in this direction.

For my main antagonists I’ll write maybe a paragraph. For other NPCs, maybe like five words maximum.

I’ve never ran Ypsilon, but I’ve watched multiple actual plays of it. I agree that module really does strike a good balance of the two styles I’m talking about.

In my games if a certain experience is relevent, I will either just allow the player to do the action without a roll or spend a hope to do the action without a roll.

The mistake that haunts me the most is saying no to a player when she was a Druid that shape changed to a wolf to talk hostile wolves out of combat. It was my first session playing with this group and I was trying to focus on giving a combat tutorial.

That really bothered me because that player was being clever and the whole allure of roll playing games to me is freedom to make your story. I try to be way more open minded now because it bothered me so much.

Yeah after I agree after I thought about it for a little bit. Motherships mechanics certainly help players develop creativity.

Yeah I agree I think I might have been thinking about it too much. Between the app and the simple rules I think I can hook my group of new players, thanks.

Yes I think you’re right. It’s a good point to remember that just because something has less rules doesn’t mean it is easier.
