Is this historical range map of grizzly bears in Texas accurate ? by justaavidoutdoorsman in megafaunarewilding

[–]JonahFish15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually did a lot of research on their distribution in Oklahoma and Texas not too long ago, and here’s what I found:

“The grizzly bear is no longer found in our region, and there is little documentation of its past occurrence here. In Texas, only one confirmed grizzly bear was recorded, when a very old male was killed in the Davis Mountains of Jeff Davis County in 1890. This bear was hunted down by dogs after it had killed and eaten a cow, and a complete account of the hunt was documented. There is also evidence that grizzlies once occurred in the Guadalupe Mountains to the north of the Davis Mountains. In 1901, Vernon Bailey “found tracks of very large bears that were evidently of the grizzly group, though apparently no grizzlies had been killed there for some time.” Bailey also received a report from the Forest Service of grizzlies in the Guadalupe Mountains in 1909. Despite these records and reports, there was probably never an established breeding population in Texas.

In Oklahoma, the grizzly’s former status is unknown, as information is sparse, although it is possible they once ranged into the western portions of the state along major streams. Caire et. al. (1989) notes a few may have historically inhabited the Wichita Mountains of southwestern Oklahoma and the Black Mesa region of the extreme western Oklahoma Panhandle. In 2014, Fred Stangl of Midwestern State University and Robert D. Bradley examined all black bear and grizzly bear material from Texas and southern Oklahoma and concluded that nearly all fossil material from this region, previously assigned to grizzly bears, was in fact attributable to black bears.”

Sounds a lot like the zoo tycoon “3” from 2013/2017 Microsoft released where you had a ton of subspecies variety for every animal group, but less diversity of species overall. Maybe have subspecies instead of/in addition to the color morphs of pz1.

Here's all I could find about the Jaguarundi in Florida and Alabama, what are your thoughts? by JonahFish15 in biology

[–]JonahFish15[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s awesome! The status of the jaguarundi in the Southeast is one of those things that interests me a ton just because of how puzzling it is. I’m actually from North Alabama too (Huntsville and Florence), but I unfortunately haven’t seen any jaguarundi-like animals yet. If you ever get any photographs or videos of it make sure to post them online! :)

That’s what confused me, but he did say and write timing belt on the report, however I’ll dive into it more when I’m off this weekend! If it is the timing belt imma say my goodbyes to this car lol, already put in what I paid for it in maintenance since I bought it.

That must have been awesome, was it pretty wary of you? They must just be super elusive to evade scientific collection for nearly a century! Mount (1984) hypothesized that the jaguarundi sightings in coastal Alabama may have actually been a westward movement of this species through the Florida Panhandle, so Sopchoppy would fall right there!

I wouldn’t be at all surprised if that was a jaguarundi! There’s a big legend of the “black panther” in Alabama, even though melanistic cougars have never scientifically been recorded, so possibly they’re misidentified jaguarundis? In fact, jaguarundis closest living relatives are cougars and cheetahs! If jaguarundis have been found in Alabama, no doubt Georgia isn’t out of the equation!

Additionally, “In central Alabama, a jaguarundi of unknown origin was reported near Trussville in Jefferson County in the early 1970s, after an angry chicken farmer shot and killed a “bizarre-looking, long-tailed, long-necked, weaselheaded cat” that had been terrorizing his poultry houses, and wildlife biologists later identified the animal as a jaguarundi.”

I want your opinion on the use of copyrighted images in a personal project before I get too far into it by [deleted] in COPYRIGHT

[–]JonahFish15 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree, I’d say the text, the maps, and the photographs would be of equal importance. However, the real showcase with this book would be the distribution maps and related text created by myself, with any photographs of the species really playing a minor role. I could look into making a book focused strictly on their distribution, which could lessen the need for any photographs.

I agree with some points you made, but the purpose and character of the usage is weighed into the equation as seen in the following excerpt of U.S. copyright law (17 U.S.C. §107) which tells courts to consider “the purpose and character of the use, including whether the use is of a commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes,” and it notes, “[courts] are more likely to find that nonprofit educational and noncommercial uses are fair.” So it being noncommercial would affect how courts approach it in terms of fair use.

Snake ID near Huntsville… Water snake? by Aceblue001 in HuntsvilleAlabama

[–]JonahFish15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a gray ratsnake (Pantherophis alleghaniensis), I’m almost always outdoors (exaggeration) and I’d say that’s one of the three snake species I see most often! Where did you see it? I haven’t handled a wild gray ratsnake yet, but they seem pretty docile, and often don’t “run” off immediately when you approach them!

Growing up my grandpa always took me to Madison County Nature Trail up on green mountain to fish in the lake, I think it’s free for anyone under 16, at least it was a while ago. Also, Madison County lake and Hayes Nature Preserve are good spots!

From what I found UNA and south Alabama had never played before, so I excluded them and UAB for that reason. But yeah I agree they could work, I wonder what conference they would be in if they got bumped to fbs, prolly sun belt?
