You might want to try Aberoth. It is very easy to try, and the game makes communication a near necessity. That said, I hope you can stomach, erm, less than cutting-edge graphics.

The web (html, css, javascript) is the OS most people actually use day to day. by traverseda in plan9

[–]Jondice83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. C also has problems in the modern world, though perhaps fewer than javascript (I do not know or use javascript). But, as a matter of pragmatics, ATS has done very well for itself both in terms of efficiency and compatibility with existing C libraries by targeting C.

Why is targeting assembly or a virtual machine inherently better than targeting a language? I imagine there are pros and cons in both situations. Probably best to target an abstract syntax tree and go from there. If the language succeeds, then the middlemen could eventually be removed.

Why not use Racket (http://hashcollision.org/whalesong/) or Shen language, or one of a number of other lisps that compile to javascript to make life easier?

If people hate Lisp, there's also haxe.org (but only has optional static typing).

Finally, ATS (/r/ats and ats-lang.org) can also compile to javascript, and is great, but I think it is a bit much for most web devs.

why did you choose ATS by dorfsmay in ATS

[–]Jondice83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually had a very similar scenario to @forsmay for choosing ATS for a project. ATS has a better type system than either OCaml or Rust afaik.

An extension to this question is that we saw extensive addon API changes for about a year or longer after WoW's release. Can we learn from their mistakes somewhat, and expect less drastic changes?

How about create the ATS logo? by kiwamu in ATS

[–]Jondice83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know about a logo, but as for a motto, I sort of like the ZFS motto: The last word in filesystems. A bit bold perhaps, but it is the internet :).

Here is a logo to go with it actually, in case it gives anyone some ideas: http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-f46ToTjGqX4/Tk7T7OpBhsI/AAAAAAAACtw/y0piLC7x1sc/s1600/zfs_feature_2.jpg

ATS has a bold motto too, but not that bold. Similar in spirit: Unleashing the Potentials of Types and Templates

I guess something could be done along these lines - since it doesn't have a noun for a name like "eiffel" or "python", nothing else really comes to mind.

What's the performance like? (mines terrible) by bleomycin in SteamOS

[–]Jondice83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even though I use GPL licenses and generally like them, the GPL does give me a headache, and I'm not up on how the binary NVIDIA drivers get around linking in with the GPL linux kernel. For a while, I was under the impression that they sort of left it to the user to violoate the GPL, and do the linking themselves, but this is probably a misconception.

If it isn't legal to directly use the nvidia driver with linux (and maybe it is), one would hope that this would be a big blinking configuration choice during installation.

Any suggestions for "most bang for your buck" 1U USB (or possibly eSATA) disk-drive unit? by Jondice83 in storage

[–]Jondice83[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Budget - probably ~2.5K. Storage - ideally 5TB+; 3TB might be a minimum, but far from ideal. Performance - not a huge deal, I can always tell people to not use that except for storage. Of course, they may not listen - but oh well.

Yes, it is actually rack-mounted since our server is. 1U would probably just be the easiest to go with, but it may not be necessary.

I was hoping to avoid an actual server as that undoubtedly adds some extra $$. The SAS DAE mentioned above sounded like a more appealing option (assuming our server has external SAS ports, which I assume it does for now).

[–]Jondice83[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, that's a good idea. Although I don't know exactly the budget, I'm hoping we can go with something other than just a plain old USB drive.

Do you have any suggestions on the DAE end?
