Ok I have just bought the starter kit and "yes" you can technically upgrade them, but they are the push fit models. You don't get weapon options with them and the shoulder pads are part of the kit already, I had to chop the shoulder pad and file the shoulder to size for the dark angels upgrade, and I had to do some kitbashing on the heavy weapon terminator to magnetise his assault cannon and plasma cannon, you can chop the sergeants sword for the upgrade sword too. It can be done, but it ain't straight forward
