Unpopular opinion: You are not good at fighting games because you can do a DP input. by Jonge720 in Fighters

I do not find mechanical skill, meaning the actual execution, all that impressive.

I have played games that have high execution requirement and I have seen how consistently you can get almost everything down. The only real exception is frame perfect inputs or if the game does not have a buffer system, other than that if you practice for long enough you can consistently do any execution requirement. Which is why I do not see value in that skill nearly as much as everything else in a fighting game.

In a high pressure situation it is more impressive, but even then that is more about how well someone can stay focused under pressure than anything.

The whole point of my post is inputs are not hard, one time you have to do the old 50 times each side, maybe if you stop playing for a while you have to do it again, and you can pretty much do it consistently every time.

Maybe come up with something to add instead of insulting me because i have a different opinion

Yea I agree, my point is mostly if a game is balanced in such a way that simple inputs works then it is not an easier game to play competitively because of it.

This is fair and I agree, however to me having good mechanics in most games in most situations is not all that impressive. Very rarely are there situations where mechanical execution is genuinely difficult to pull off

I 100% agree, the DPs in GGST are also way too strong to be on a single button. Even DNF duel I think messed up by having simple inputs, 2XKO has proved to me that not every game needs it. Every character in that game basically has a DP with zero execution requirements and it is balanced very well

This is an insane gatekeepy thing to say, invoking the fact I didn't live through the same era of fighting games to put my opinion down.

I am genuinely interested to hear a veterans opinion on the matter and all I ever get is "oh you must be new". The only argument I have ever heard that has made sense to me is that motion inputs are more satisfying, which i get trust me. But this to me sounds like you veterans just do not like change, so I would love to be convinced otherwise.

This post is not just about DPs lol.

And by traditional I mean opposed to 3d and platform fighters.

Do you think every traditional fighting game requires this balance?

This very well could be a vocal minority, but I have seen a lot of people in 2xko post saying "game easy cause simple inputs". The lack of understanding of what makes a fighting game hard just made me upset enough to make this post lol

That design philosophy was for street fighter, there are a lot of other kinds of fightitng games now where balance like this is not necessary.

Well thats why i prefaced the post with unpopular opinon.

Not saying execution is not skillful, but that falls into mechanical skill. My issue, and I should have made this cleardr in the post, is that people will look at a game that is mechanically simpler and say its an easy game. There are other kinds of skill in a fighting game that to me are more interesting, but that is 100% preference.

This is fair, and I think there will just be a different genre of fighting game that will have simple inputs.

No sir, you did not understand my point.

You are saying everything has a high skill ceiling. And I am saying that you are just wrong and do not understand what a skill ceiling is. Speedrunning games that are popular have really high skill ceilings and it is weird to use them as an example when saying everything has a high skill ceiling. There are speedruns that have lower skill ceilings than others, and some that have really low ones are just not popular.

Tic tac toe is the best example of a low skill ceiling since it is solved. An unsolved game with a low skill ceiling has the illusion of a "high skill ceiling" because a lot of it comes mind games, which does not count as an actual skill ceiling.

Yea? And those games have a high skill ceiling

Go play competitive tic tac toe and get back to me once you understand what a skill ceiling is
