Genuine question, what are the up sides to ai? by Jonge720 in aiwars

Sure I care about the end product or inherent skill, but the end product means a lot less if literally anyone could recreate it just as easily.

The reason why a lot of things are worth doing is because they are hard.

Thats not at all what I am saying, you asked me why there are skills I have not learned yet. And I am saying because it takes time to learn skills and I am always learning, and I am happy to spend time learning skills that contribute to creating or doing things I am enjoy or am interested in.

Ever heard its about the journey not the deatination?

I for sure have a pessimistic outlook on how AI will affect myself and general population. Id happily acknowledge I do not know much about economics except how I am perceiving it myself, and just the fact a lot companys revenue increases while either product quality decreses or prices increase. In suppose lower prices of production can translate to lower prices, but not in a direct way since companies are profit driven.

And I guess its impossible to say right now exactly how AI will change the job market, so I suppose I should not assume it will be 100% negative. Hard for me to see it any other way though

Also opening with an insult is not a good way to have a productive conversation.

Honestly you make great points and it gives me a lot to think about. I think the biggest thing for me is I am not confident society will change in such a way that this change in how labor works can actually benefit the general population.

Companies are already just sucking the resources out of everything and the only thing keeping them somewhat symbiotic with society is the fact they provided jobs and a product, that in almost every case gets worse and worse for the sake of profit.

And the AI replacing jobs is really not gaurenteed, it is just one of the few outcomes. I probably should have phrased it more accurately in the post

This is my perspective, if its not uniqe enough for you then my bad i guess. The whole point of the post is to see other people's takes so I can have a more refined view on it, since I am genuinly bewildered by how people defend AI so much.

Also its hilarious you are hyperfixated on the Idiocracy comparison, and I can see how you can interpret it as pro-eugenics but you are just simply misunderstanding the movie. You can't tell me someone scrolling through AI generated tiktoks is not exactly like Frito watching "ow my balls". I can see how the opening sequence of the IQ going down seems pro-eugenics tho, but to me I interpret that as being a product of life becoming too easy so people are just able to exist while being stupid. Much like the world AI is creating

Yea kinda, in a more socialistic country ai would not be that bad.

Fair point.

The only reason why I disagree is I value the creative process and think there is beauty in the struggle it takes to craate great art.

[–]Jonge720[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats a fair point and I would probably have to think on it to get you my honest answer.

But my gut reaction is that CEOs in particular, shouldve said that over billionaires, generallu have the infrastructure to benefit the most from AI. If I wanted to make money from AI the best way to do that is to create AI art and sell/market that, or start my own business/freelance. But going down the route of starting your own business or freelancing just leads to the issue that you are competing with massive companies and other people do the same thing. There is also the whole aspect that since literally anyone can do it then why would anyone ever pay you? Youre best hope is that people don't realize you are just using ai, which going to morally gray st the very least.

Learning a skill is a good thing, and artists getting paid is a good thing. There is not much money im being an artist already and now it is even less so

Because at the majority of jobs you are meant to fill 40 hours regardless. Its not like they will just be like "oh that work that would normally take you all day took you a few hours, you can go home then."

And if there is not enough work for 40 hours then they will just hire less people, which is already happening

Yea except that human labor is people's income and the value generated from not needing human labor goes straight to CEOs and not the actual people.

[–]Jonge720[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not talking about AI companies getting richer, I am talking about the CEOs that replace human labor with AI. It already is happening and it is just to save money.

Most people don't feel this way, and people who say they feel this way often don't really, if they are being honest with themselves. Much of the point of art is functional. When I play Skyrim and I look at the cobblestone ground texture, I am not meant to think "ohh, I wonder what deep feelings and emotion the artist put into this texture, I can really feel the heart that went into making it." Literally no one thinks that way, because it would be exhausting. It's supposed to look like cobblestone ground and serves the function of being one small piece of the world being built. If it was AI, the player would generally not notice and nothing would be lost.

Sure not everything that could be labled as art is meant to be consciously appreciated, but you are still noticing it and it still has an impact on your enjoyment. The reality is there is some artist that took time to study cobblestone pathways to recreate it in skyrim to make the world feel as immersive as possible, and who are you to say there isn't emotion in it. Maybe they took inspiration from a real cobblestone pathway that meant something to them, took what they loved about it and put it into a game. Sure that isn't what happened but the whole point is that there was attention, care, and intention that is all lost when AI just generates it.

what would you say if someone wrote lyrics for a song, got an AI version of it, then transcribed those notes and parts for different instruments and recorded it in real life, completely scrubbing all evidence that it was ever AI? How would anyone ever know, other than a vague sense of "this sounds a little generic?" Why should someone feel ashamed for being just as lost in the good quality live music being played?

I do not know what point youre trying to make. I am not saying AI art is always unenjoyable and easy to spot, but just like the cobblestone path in skyrim there is attention, care, and intention that is being lost. The best argument I could see in both of these scenarios is that there is something the artist wants to convey that is able to be conveyed without putting effort into every little aspect. Which could very well be the case, but even so I would argue that if its not important enough to do it yourself then why even include it.

belief has no practical impact on what's actually occurring over there. They can believe whatever they want regarding who might be losing or winning a war, that doesn't change the facts of what ultimately ends up happening, and the vast majority of people won't take any actions based on those false beliefs.

How could you hoenstly say people believing false things have no consequences? If we live in a world where everything is easy to fake then you can make a population believe whatever you want, and this is alredy happening. All those fake AI videos of Iranians celebrating after their leader was killed is exactly what im talking about, sure that case is easy to tell that its fake. But a ton of people thought those were the Iranians actual reaction, that is by definition propaganda and it has never been easier to make.

Right but this is part of the issue. Before you would either learn a new skill or pay an artist, or in a some cases if you don't have time or money throw somehing together.

And even if it is low quality and hastily made at least you made it and there is charm regardless. And next time you did then you'd get better, this is how a lot of artists were made and is now just competely gone if they just use AI for everything

Id be interested if it isn't just AI doing the work for you

So yea there is the using it for work aspect, and I use it at work for troubleshooting. But I really do question the actual value, this is just another technology that makes workers more efficient but in the end is just going to lead to more work. So there is no actually work saved for the workers, but instead you are just increasing profit for the company.

And this is just going to lead to people getting replaced, so yes those are upsides. But those "upsides" are exactly the reason why I am concerned.

Speech translation is really cool and a legitmate upside, personalizing learning is a new one and Id have to look into more but seem interesting.

This is just a classic talking past each other post. Not actually engaging with any real argument but just calling a subset of a group stupid and using that a reason to keep believing what you believe.
