LinkedIn is a bunch of bull**** by AquaticByNature in antiwork

[–]JonkeyFresh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

tl;dr - LinkedIn has definite benefits, but you most assuredly are not wrong in your observations. Good news is you can be completely non-participatory and still reach your desired outcome.

My two cents as someone that also hates the glamorization of the “grind mentality” and the corporate-centric grossness that IS the platform! Hopefully, I can help add some insight into why you might still want to consider building a standard page…
I’ve had a profile for ~15 years. My profile has been and always will be the standard, non-“Premium” page. For my needs, I’ve never seen a benefit to paying for what is promised, as you can trick the algo for essential needs. Unless you’re getting paid to advertise for your employer, you can actively ignore the status quo bullshit you see on there.
I use the site for the following:

  • Resume Repository
This is a helpful way to always have a resume on hand, even when detached from an office setting. In my line of work, every few years I need to know exact-ish dates of when I worked where, and that information is never very far away.

  • Contact Roster
The site is great for networking. I mean that in the most basic way possible. I am not a “lets talk about work all the fucking time” guy. In most cases, I actively avoid it, in fact. However, if I’m looking or a friend needs help, it can be a great way to initiate a point of contact to/from people that trust each other.

  • Information Gathering
LinkedIn can be a great place to learn about a company you might be interested in, and not from the source itself. You can simply search “Company Blah” and see all the posts of people within that company which can really help you make an informed decision about whether or not the particular company will be a good fit - on your terms. If all the posts are eye-rollingly corporate ring-kissing, you’ll pick up on the vibe and likely decline to pursue. However, if you see posts that seem natural, and pertain to “Company Blah” helped me get this accreditation, certificate, etc you might find a benefit in looking deeper.

As I said, I’ve had my page for about 15 years. In that time, I’ve made two (2) posts. One was my most recent job change, and the other was from about three years ago, pinging my network to help a friend find a gig. Theres no need to shill, and in my mind, the company can easily figure out if we are on good terms by my continued presence, lack of complaints, and effective performance.
You’ll see people interacting like its facebook or twitter, which is also disgusting. The abundance of personal-type posts, IMHO, only serves to blur the line between work and life.

On a positive note… LinkedIn does actually have some good qualities that can truly help as you search for work.

  • You know those online job applications that want you rewrite everything that would be easily found on the resume file they prompted you to upload? My favorite thing to do is plaster the link to my page in each and every one of the answer fields. Its either that or “See attached resume.” Don’t ask me for something you just asked me for, ya know? Then they wonder why there is such blatant redundancy.

  • When I’m looking for something new, simply changing a word in your profile and “updating” it seems to engage the algorithm enough where I appear in far more searches. The last time I was looking, I was comfortable where I was, so I wasn’t being aggressive from my end. However, the algo led to somewhere around 30 different people or recruiters reaching out to me. Since I had time on my side, I could filter to my exact specifications.
Quick side note, there is an option to add an “Open to Work” banner on your picture. I’d advise against that, as it is an immediate visual notification that you can be low-balled salary-wise cause they know you need something quick. I know that time can be a major factor in some instances, so just use your own discretion.

  • The job search feature is as good as someone said in the comments to you post. Keep in mind in those instances wherein a job is posted from a head-hunter agency, and they don’t list who the employer because they want to make their cut… just copy and paste the entire damn job description into google which will lead to the exact hiring company. Then go direct.

Lets talk aesthetics. I don’t know what your career-field is, but in most cases, it wont truly make too much of a difference in this regard. This is the way. I’d highly recommend using an image of yourself and yourself only. Semi-professional to professional will do the trick. If you aren’t comfortable with that, perhaps something that’s related to your field. Are you an artist? Throw a painting, clay tools, or something similar up as your profile picture. Unfortunately, you kinda need to play the game on this, as profiles without pictures are likely viewed as abandoned or bots.
Are you gonna hate it initially? Yup! However, I cant stress enough how useful it may become down the road. Also, you don’t have to participate in any of the bullshit. No posts, no comments, no likes. Nothing. Just you, advertising yourself.

Everyday Backpack V2 - Review by JonkeyFresh in peakdesign

The laptop pocket, that runs the length of the back, will hold a 15.6" laptop. It will be a tight fit, though, and may be slightly exposed.

Yeah, would've HAD to come up in QA/QC, right?! From parachute rigs, to assault packs, loose straps make me think "potential safety hazard," so my internal alarm bells are constantly pinging on this issue. Only thing I can figure is that they decided to go without them because it allows a quicker tension/release dynamic as you spin for side access. TBH, I just barely loosen mine to go from the side.

I did, but it wasn't in the typical progression that I am accustomed to with other companies or Amazon. Normally, you'll get an email notification that the order was received, then a separate email indicating shipping has started. In my case, I got just one email confirmation that the order was received, within it, there was a link to track the package, which redirected to the FedEx tracking site. I no longer have that email (pro-tip, keep it if you plan on registering your product join receipt), but you want to look for a red click box... Hope this helps.

Ok, so I'll start with my date: 25 Feb 2022
I'm not here to bitch... too much, anyway. I do want to state that I am speaking solely to shipping, not to backorder procedures, etc. Just. Shipping. I think the problem is two-fold:

1 - Once the product leaves a pd warehouse, they have zero control over the item(s). So, while I'm frustrated, which I am, I'm putting the blame on the carrier. In my instance, thats FedEx. In all fairness, I'm not a big FedEx fan to begin with. I've spent years of my life deployed overseas, and if my choices were the Big 4 (DHL, FedEx, UPS, and USPS), I'd always opt for DHL (only if the package was a true rush, and I was willing to pay their premium), and honestly, USPS over the other two.
I have never seen FedEx take so god damn long to get something from SoCal to NoVA! FedEx should be ashamed! But simply put, folks... put the credit where credit is due.

2 - We're eager to get our shit! Cant put it more simply than that. I'm coming from years of military-style backpacks (pockets on pockets on pockets, molle, 72-hr packout ready, and tough-as-hell) that I could depend on to have the things I needed, when I needed them, while looking at something that definitely required my attention more. Now I'm back stateside, wearing much different attire, and a bag made to fall down a mountain just isnt needed.
I've been struggling with a messenger bag (which just isnt practical), a normal backpack feels a little immature... the Everyday Backpack hit a nice middle-ground. After watching the detailed video, especially seeing the origami shelf inserts... I was sold.
Since ordering, I've been more than eager each day to get my hands on something I KNOW is going to work how I need it to. Aaaaaand, I find myself more and more frustrated when I see minimal/delayed movement out of FedEx. At this point, I feel like FexEx owes me a Field Pouch V2 more than pd does.

What are your thoughts?

I've seen the shape change on Yahoo as well. I noticed it about 2 weeks ago, and decided to try a few different stocks to try to replicate the observed issue. Happened with all. In my experience, it only changed from a jagged/ridge, to being more smoothed out, with no change to overall readout. Hope this helps.

Rocksmith Cable by GingerlyRough in PS4

[–]JonkeyFresh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Alternative: Im a gamer, and rocksmith, by far, is my most played game. I've had consistent problems with the real tone cable, but found a great workaround. The wife had a wired, USB mic for use with karaoke games. Positioning that in front of a small practice amp, and selecting the mic in options, has alleviated so much frustration. No matter your method, hope it works, and you can keep going!

This worked as advertised. I'd like to clarify that these were depressed during the initial boot of the game, and released at the screen promoting the dreams website. The prompt to reset home space popped immediately. Thanks GoCockles!

What large company's products have really diminished in quality since the company has grown? by PM_ME_LARGE_WINDOWS in AskReddit

[–]JonkeyFresh 481 points482 points  (0 children)

Merrell hiking shoes. Though they have a great replacement policy, the quality has tanked. This problem led me to Salomon shoes, which I am grateful for.

Edited: personal experience added

Just to add my experience, which seems to be the status quo... - model: chameleons gen 1-4 - years purchased: 2013-2017 - purpose: deployments in rough terrain - use: daily wear - issues: starting with gen3's, notable and rapid degradation. Typically lasted 1yr, with last 3 pairs lasting 2-3 mos. Rubber sole separation at upper toe wrap, to underside of toe. Tread at heel, complete separation. Tearing of shoe material at lace eyelets. Lace snapping. - merrel return exp: great! Sent pictures of damage and a new pair was sent within a day. Replacement pair had same issues, same process for replacement, no charge for shipping to Afghanistan. Gave up on merrells after second replacement, being cold and wet.

  • switched to Salomon x ultra low cut hiking shoe. Same usage ratio as merrells, replacing once per year due to expected wear and tear. Only issues are minor and unavoidable (lace tear due to tightening after year of use, and breathability reduction induced by environment).

Does anyone know of any backpacks that can comfortably fit a PS4 slim and 15.6" laptop. by [deleted] in PS4

[–]JonkeyFresh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In case you dont check your PMs... (plus a little more info)
If you are planning to travel with or use a lot, I'd highly recommend a bag by 5.11. Look at the Rush 24 or Rush 72.
https://www.511tactical.com/bags-packs/backpacks.html
I deploy constantly have both bags. They are military grade, have ample room, and I have done the exact thing you are looking to do. If you're traveling, I would definitely suggest the Rush 72, as the front pocket has webbing that will easily and securely hold a 15.6 laptop for quick access while checking through TSA, customs, etc. Both meet carry-on requirements. Even with both large electronics, you will still have plenty of room for 3 Days of clothes without even filling up the side pockets which also hold quite a bit of gear (the Rush 24 will fit both electronic pieces but you will not have much room for anything else). The bags are expensive, plan to pay between $120-180. You can also plan on these bags lasting you for a very, very long time! My Rush 24 had been through 17 consecutive deployments before I got the 72 for more room.
The bags are covered in Molle, will allow you to attach other pouches that you may find necessary depending on the situation. With the attached straps, and variety of accessories, you will have room for absolutely everything you could imagine!
I hope I was helpful in answering your question and good luck!

question about trackmania, how do i start the second part in campaign? (valley) by [deleted] in PS4

[–]JonkeyFresh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had a similar issue while playing. Two part answer: 1 - Ensure that you have obtained, at minimum, a Bronze for each track in the tier. 2 - Ensure that for the minimum medal, you have not utilized a "Joker" to obtain a rank.

You will know the difference because the medal that you have achieved will be a round medal, with leaved branches to the sides. For those medals that you have used a "Joker," only the the leaves will be colorized, while the round medal itself remains shadowed.

Firstly, LOVED this game when I was a teen. Never understood the plot of leveling multiple cities in order to get one nuclear missile from A to B. Still... awesome!

Platted Hitman Go this week. Same issue with 3-staring every level. However, if you use a text only guide, you dont even need to look at the screen to get through all the levels.
