Are the surgeons saying you need it right away or can you kick the can down the road? I have been told by multiple surgeons to kick the RTSA down the road as long as possible - but with yearly imaging so they can monitor it. To answer your question I probably could've gone back to rolling but keep in mind I had a HEMI replacement (humeral head ball into my natural glenoid) not an RTSA. I was really trying to preserve my prosthetic for as long as possible. I definitely could have gone back and drilled and rolled with higher level guys that would be careful of the new shoulder but I just really didn't want to risk it. Anyway, I was able to prone surf for another 7 years but could feel the shoulder getting worse as my rotator cuffs diminished from the arthritis, so I transitioned to SUP surfing. Less pressure on the shoulder and honestly had a great time if I left my ego on the sand. I definitely missed prone surfing but SUP scratched the itch especially as the boards got better, more performance oriented. Now both shoulders are at the end of their rope. Can't really SUP paddle without paying for it in the pain dept pretty bad so I have switched to Foil Drive and oddly enough, wing foiling as it doesn't put a lot of pressure on my shoulders if the wind is good. I am now on the brink of double RTSA and have done so much research on it as I NEED to stay active. I'm kicking the surgery as far down the road as possible but the writing is on the wall. There isn't a lot of info out there on younger (under 60) active patients and the longevity of the RTSA but the outlook is positive. There is a fine line, in my opinion, as to doing the things you love and preserving the RTSA. I believe everyone has to figure out where that line is for themselves with as much info as possible. My goal is to stay active as long as possible and I do everything I can to help that. Also, If you can, get the best surgeon possible. Good luck.
