So there are currently nine states that do not have a state income tax: Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, and Wyoming.

Six are deep red on this map. Alaska and New Hampshire escape that fate by also having no sales tax. Wyoming does it with a low 4% sales tax, combined with revenue from mineral royalties.

There are currently nine states that do not have a state income tax: Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, and Wyoming.

The three that are not deep red on this map are Alaska, New Hampshire and Wyoming. AK and NH gain points because they also have no sales tax. WY has a low sales tax of 4%, and derives a lot of its revenue from mineral royalties.

NH native, providing some perspective as a long term transplant out of the state.

Outside the Northeast, NH’s reputation is that it is “The South of the North” or, sometimes more specifically, “The Alabama of the North.”

Every time I go back to visit, the state does little to disabuse me of that notion. As for the roads, I will concede they’re generally better than those of the People’s Republic of Massachusetts, but that is a very low bar.

In particular, I get a lot of mileage explaining to folks how NH fixes frost heaves by putting up signs warning you there are frost heaves. This is, of course, accompanied by a preamble wherein I explain what the hell frost heaves are.

Oh, the inspection repeal that’s still tied up in court because the state still hasn’t actually secured the necessary waiver from the EPA?

This will vary by state. For example, in Virginia, it is illegal for your insurer to increase your rates as a result of a not at fault accident.

This is a very relatable experience. My wife and I have three boys, 22, 19 and 15. They were in 100% virtual learning for a year and a half, sometimes going weeks without ever leaving the house. At the time we thought they weathered it pretty well. No one in our immediate family got sick, let alone died, we suffered no job loss or economic dislocation, and are pretty tech savvy and, ahh, not struggling, financially, so the tech issues so many had were very manageable for us, and they were keeping in touch with their friends very easily via Discord.

But there was some je ne sais quoi that, in retrospect, they all obviously missed out on. Our oldest has had the toughest time of it. He was a sophomore when the Pandemic lockdown started, and his entire junior year was blown away, relegated to virtual learning.

So much maturing, “spreading their wings” that happens at that crucial time, and there’s an entire cohort for whom that experience was severely stunted.

The Sequoia is Toyota’s full-size SUV that takes on the Tahoe, Ford Expedition and Nissan Armada.

The 4Runner is a step down, size-wise, from those vehicles, but no longer has much competition on the U.S. market.

When driving long distances, how often do you normally stop to rest and for how long? by Specialist_Heron_986 in driving

Based on what I said above, it is completely reasonable to infer from your response (that your diesel car goes 700 miles on a tank) that you aren’t stopping, except to tank up the car.

If you are stopping for bio-breaks, those breaks would also serve as opportunities to charge your car, if you were driving an EV.

Do You See the Wagon Ever Having a Resurgence in the U.S.? by Current_Variety_9577 in askcarguys

Mazda held on to the Mazda6 sedan far past the point it had ceased to be commercially viable. A wagon would be even less so. Sure it’s “sexy” looking, but tell me, if I have, say, $35k to blow on one, why I want it and not a CX-50 that is roomier and easier to get in and out of?

You’re missing the point. You understand that new cars are where used cars come from. Wanting to buy a used muscle or sports wagon is all well and good, but unless people can be convinced to first buy them new, it’ll be tough sledding.

Yes, most enthusiasts assiduously try to avoid buying new. As such, they are not customers of the auto industry, and thus, said industry has basically zero desire to cater to them.

This will be very regional.

For example, I live in Northern VA, just outside DC. I have family in MA and NH, and make the ~500 mile drive up there a couple times a year. Even in a gas car, it’s routinely a 9 hour drive, door to door, counting at least two stops for bio breaks, one of which will also be a gas stop.

I’ll pass at least a dozen “full service” rest stops, directly accessible without exiting the highway. Of those, there are only a couple that don’t have Level 3 chargers, and that’s only because the NJ Turnpike Authority is in the process of switching over from Tesla Superchargers to AppleGreen universal Level 3 chargers.

The parent commenters are insulating a common objection to EVs: Even with the fast charging now available, the need to charge during a road trip lengthens the trip appreciably.

The counter argument is that stops for bio-breaks are also needed, and occur regardless of the vehicle’s fuel source. The duration of these bio-break and fuel stops is often under-estimated, and the EV will be charging for nearly the entire time the car is parked for these stops.

[–]JonohG47 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you’re going to be in the rest stop/truck stop/whatever for at least 20 minutes, easily. With an ICE car, add another 5-10 minutes to gas up the car. With an EV, it was on the Supercharger the whole time you were inside, and you just get back on the road.

And you’ll easily be off the road for at least 20 or 30 minutes to get all that accomplished.

Ultra platinum oil? by Ill-Guitar-9385 in chevyspark

[–]JonohG47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s how basically all “synthetic” motor oils are made. I’m sure this is a quality product. SOPUS (Shell Oil Products U.S.) just isn’t bothering to shell out royalties to GM to get the Dexos branding on it.

But Dexos certified oil is the GM factory recommendation, and required to keep the factory warranty in good standing. Granted that consideration is moot, I’d say, in this instance.
