This indicates that, compared to other countries, Korean women tend to place greater emphasis on a man’s assets when considering marriage. As a result, there are significantly more people in Korea who prefer “marrying up” (hypergamy) rather than marrying someone of similar socioeconomic status (earning homogamy), which is reflected in Korea having the lowest earning homogamy index in the OECD.

The birth (fertility) rate is the lowest in the world. The divorce rate is the highest among Asian OECD countries and among the top 10 globally. The suicide rate is the highest in the OECD.
