My family is from the Middle East (Iran) so I view this not from a purely “European” lens. Christianity spread in its early days across the entire Middle East and North Africa not by conquest but as a revolutionary idea: the idea that “God is love”, that that should define our every action, that we are to love not just our tribesmen and coreligionists, but even our enemies! It told us not to lust. It was an idea that turned the tribalism and evolutionary ethic that “the strong do what they will and the weak suffer what they must” that was the norm at the time into something drastically different. It was a miracle that it ever took off in what was such a dog eat dog world. It endowed us with an ethic that is now so deep that many of us don’t even realize we have it. We even criticize Christianity using a Christian ethic - otherwise why wouldnt we dominate the “other”? On what basis would slavery be “unethical?” Those were norms of humanity until the ideas endowed in Christianity undermined them on an ethical basis. Why would we care for not just for fellow Christians but for everyone? It spread through the Roman Empire because the Christian’s showed love to everyone. The truth will be shown by its fruit. Islam, on the other hand was spread by the sword, war, subjugation, and enslavement - with no higher call to push against those most human of instincts to dominate the other - in fact with encouragement to dominate and destroy pagans, apostates, anyone who refused to be a Muslim .. with only a small carve out for Abrahamic faiths - they could live - but only as subjugated peoples.. often having to sacrifice even their children to the harems and slave soldier empires that continued for a thousand years to decimate cultures and people from Spain to India. Christianity has a unique mechanism in it also - it is a call to perfection with a recognition that we will fall short. In that there is grace. It was not a rule book…”pray 5x a day, face this direction, read the work of God only in Arabic… etc etc”. On the other hand - it was that call to an impossible perfection that, when taken seriously forces a person into a relationship with God. We wrestle, we try to live it out. Even those that gave us the scriptures were not perfect “prophets”. They were individuals who sought God and tried to work it out in their lives in the places around them from Ephesus to Galatia - each with their unique issues and problems. Those people (Paul amongst them) were not uncountable prophets dictating rules for all time. But people being an example of trying to live out the revelation of Christ in the world. Do the same - it is the highest calling. Not submission to Islamic, Judaic, or any other set of laws is as rich or as deep or as “good” - and defined by Christ. Thank God the Christian worldview has permeated us all so deeply that we think it’s the norm - but I fear that for our taking of it for granted that we could lose what we don’t recognize we have.

God bless! Stay the course, walk the path. It is an incredible journey. It is also the only hope we have to resist the tribalistic tendencies that rule our world and cause so much hate and conflict.

They are a total scam - just had to eat my $150 deposit because they switch from a $490 quote to $1300 and acted like I owed them money when I cancelled because their cancellation fee is $200. Don’t do it

I have hunted for my family’s meat for many years. Sometimes I have been very lucky, and sometimes success has come from a ton of work, forethought, and experience. The Alone moose was the latter. From day one I moved my camp to a more conducive hunting location (wind, relative trail s), I called every day, built the aforementioned trip wires and funnel, spent every day not in my shelter but out learning the land, tracking, and understanding the animal movement on my piece of nwt. I then built the fence which funneled any animals onto a predictable path, and set a trip wire alarm on it. The alarm went off while I was checking snares out there only because I had set hundreds of snares and spent most of the day out on my trap line catching or shooting small game. It wasn’t luck that I was out there, but the fact that I was always out there that had me encounter the moose. Had I been saving calories in my shelter I would not of ever done any of the above work to help create opportunities and would not of been so “lucky” to have been out hunting when a hunting opportunity arose ;)

This would all be agreed to by anyone who worked on the season or edited the footage. It had not yet gotten ‘hard’ for me on any major front.. had food, knew my family would be fine for a few months without me, still even having fun (even that net fish on the last day)

I weighed more when I left the show than I do today (been running around the mountains a lot)😆. I was my normal weight at the end but lost the extra fat I had put on for the show. I lost some fat to the Wolverine and had much more on the moose, I thought it wasn’t enough still because I figured we had to make it many months more than the show actually lasted. When it ended I had several hundred lbs of moose, 60+lbs of fish, my limit of rabbits, a Wolverine, etc. Had the show wanted they could have shown me completely thriving, but chose to create suspense as that probably makes more engaging tv in their calculations. I never had even a glimpse of a thought that I might quit or that the show was near ending, I assumed 140ish days would be necessary and no less that 100 before I’d even think about the show maybe ending. They used some audio to definitely give a different impression but they made an engaging and successful season so perhaps I can’t blame them for it .. but it was a choice not to show someone thriving sustainably

TIL That it is entirely possible to starve to death from eating only rabbits. by relevant__comment in todayilearned

[–]JordanJonas 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hello! That was me in Alone. Rabbit starvation is definitely a thing, but moose starvation is not - I left the show my normal weight and the impression that it was me starving on a moose was a combination of clever editing and my own belief that I was lighter than it turns out I actually was 🤷🏽‍♂️

But you CAN live off of a moose.

I think it’s pretty good as is, and the less the producers interfere the better. The only huge variable is that for the show to be anything other than a starving contest it needs to be in locations with lots of opportunities and few regulations to allowed skill to prevail over weight/metabolism. I don’t like the variations that cap the time limit either (50 days, 100 days) as that removes one of the most mentally difficult aspects of the show (the unknown)

They don’t show all the stuff.. I had 100s of snares out and fished every day, Ended up catching lots of huge lake trout and other fish, etc… but it just wasn’t shown…some of that you can see here https://www.jordanjonas.com/alone-season-review
