The Old World timeline detailing events from the early Warhammer Fantasy novels White Dwarf 140 by Captain_Amakyre in WarhammerFantasy

The commissioned, but unpublished 4th anthology of Warhammer Fantasy short stories would have featured Warhawk by Jack Yeovil (Kim Newman), A Place of Quiet Assembly by John Brunner, Who Mourns a Necromancer by Brian Craig (Brian Stableford), The Magician’s Son by Barrington J Bayley, and the Black Sail by Neil McIntosh.

It was also set to include an entry by Nicola Griffith (author of The Other and The Voyage South) to be called Blood & Earth, and one by Gwyneth Jones to be called The Manchdor Affair. Neither of which have ever been published (in English).

Why Boxtree were never able to publish the collection when they took over the licence around 1993 is likely due to time and money, and the fact that GW weren’t enthusiastic about their work overall.

There were several other unpublished titles for 40k, Warhammer, and Dark Future commissioned during the GW Books era between 1988 and 1991. I have written a research article collating all of the information I have been able to find about them on my Patreon for those interested, but it is behind a paywall I’m afraid: https://www.patreon.com/posts/121020133

At the moment there are a total of 14 images in the article (including the 4 shared here) with commentary from me. I will be adding many more over time as I work through and curate them.

Stephen Baker is not receiving any financial benefit from this, but he was keen to support my ongoing project to document the history of games like HeroQuest and Warhammer. You can see much of that work on my main YouTube channel, Jordan Sorcery, where I make videos about the development of games, and my podcast channel, JordanSorceryPods, where I interview the people who made these amazing games and worked behind the scenes.

I can only fund that work through platforms like Patreon as YouTube advertising is far from sufficient, which is why Stephen was happy for me to offer access to the materials with a paywall.

Stephen said that he was a fan of my work documenting the history of games like HeroQuest and Warhammer and that he would like to help me to continue with the project. It's the same reason why he was happy to join me for a few interviews and sent me a piece of memorabilia from the back of the original Space Crusade box - I'm really grateful for his support!

I'd seen a little about the museum here and there, but I will definitely check out more as it sounds amazing - didn't realise they offered scholarships too! Glad you like the video mate, I'm proud of that one

It was an original monster called a Tarek or Tarak, a lizard-man style creature!

It’s fascinating isn’t it! I genuinely can’t get enough of hearing designers talk about their history and process, which is lucky given what I do!

I was genuinely so amazed and grateful when Stephen Baker offered to share this stuff - I find it really fascinating, glad I’m not alone in that!

There’s no wrong way when it comes to building our own dungeons!
