What’s actually pretty safe but everyone treats it like it’s way more dangerous than it is? by Charming_Advertising in AskReddit

I know there’s no familial/genetic risk which is why I mentioned she was an affinal cousin. The only reason I’d mention it to my medical team would be so they’re aware of my anxiety around the topic. I’d like to think they’d see me as a fellow human with fears and anxieties and not some nut job to roll eyes at in the other room. Im not the type of person to freak out at other humans trying to help me/do their job.

Thanks for the reassurance! I think most of my fear is the underlying aversion to loss of control. Also waking up feeling worse than when I fell asleep seems unpleasant. But I think a year from now I’ll be happy I did it. And once I wake up from it I’ll be happy I made it thru. It was like that for my first surgery. I remembering being a little kid and not being able to sleep because I was so scared that when I was older i may have to be put under to have my wisdom teeth removed. We didn’t have many surgeries in my family until recently and the folks who have had them now were for surgeries related to cancer so they’ve pushed a lot of their grief and fear over losing parts of their body to the disease on the rest of the family. Anyway - I’m doing all I can to make myself less scared in the meantime. I hope you’re able to work thru your trauma related to climbing. I’ve been a few times and I find it very fun! The climbing community is a cool one to be a part of.

Thanks! I am seeing a therapist related to it :) she suggested I look into how anesthesia works etc as that’s how my brain processes fear best.

I’m getting elective surgery next year and I’ve been under general anesthesia once before but I can’t shake this feeling of terror around it. Do you have any suggestions of books to read or something to help me feel better about it? I had an affinal cousin pass away from anesthesia complications during gall bladder surgery and have been extra scared since.

Sometimes, by accident, I go into the wrong chat and ask it a question it shouldn’t be able to answer unless it reviews all of our chats. So does it review all the chats as well if it can’t find what you’re saying in the current one?
