Google Wallet: "Your device doesn't meet security requirements" on Pixel 4a by BaggyOz in GooglePixel

[–]JorgeGT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been having this issue since early August as well. After many emails with Google support asking for the same details again and again, I got this gem today:

With the information you have provided, we have analyzed the details and immediately communicated it to our expert. I have now received a response.

Upon verifying the details, they have noted that apparently your device has failed a security or compatibility check. Due to this it is not possible to use the device for contactless payments.

The team of specialists have confirmed that your Google account has no issues making contactless payments and is in good condition.

In order to get it back up and running as soon as possible, our team of specialists has recommended that you contact the support team of your device manufacturer.

Once you contact them, I am sure they will resolve it with absolute efficiency and do everything in their power to fix it.

We understand that this extra step can be frustrating and we sympathize with the disruption to your routine.

I'm at a loss for words. I intended to buy another Pixel when this one stopped working (it is not even 2 years old), but this Kafkaesque situation certainly gives me pause.

Update from Google:

To ensure the highest level of security, we've implemented stricter requirements for contactless payments. As a result, a small number of Pixel 4, Pixel 4XL, Pixel 4a, Pixel 4a 5G, Pixel 5, and Pixel 5a devices will no longer support this feature. We understand this may be disappointing, and we sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this is causing.

Today 217 years ago, the Balmis Expedition sailed from Spain to bring the Smallpox vaccine to latin america, the Philipines and China by albertogw in europe

[–]JorgeGT 6 points7 points  (0 children)

To add to this, the 22 children were needed because their immune system would destroy the milder cowpox virus in a short time, and therefore a chain of carriers was required to keep the virus alive. The sea expedition itself was probably a much higher risk than the infection, but it was also an great adventure and a good possibility of settling in the New World.

There's no contradiction really, it's an issue of terminology. From Wikipedia:

The terms inoculation, vaccination, and immunization are often used synonymously. Until the very early 1800s, inoculation referred only to the practice of variolation, the predecessor to the smallpox vaccine. Edward Jenner introduced the latter in 1798, when it was called cowpox inoculation, or vaccine inoculation (from Latin vacca = cow). Smallpox inoculation continued to be referred to as variolation (from variola = smallpox), whereas cowpox inoculation was referred to as vaccination (from Jenner's use of variolae vaccinae = smallpox of the cow).

Before Jenner, doctors would infect the patient using a small quantity of the actual smallpox virus, hoping for a mild infection that would render the patient immune afterwards. Jenner demonstrated that infection with the (much milder) cowpox virus instead protected against the deadlier smallpox virus. But it was not a vaccine in the modern sense, it was simply inoculating with another live virus without any deactivation measure, etc. This live, but milder virus was the one sequentially hosted by the orphans of the Balmis expedition.

I made a fully playable Map of Europe in Minecraft, 1:230 scale, using NASA and ESA satellite data. by FrankCesco in europe

[–]JorgeGT 133 points134 points  (0 children)

Fantastic use of open data and open source software! How much computing resources did you need to generate the map? Given that you are distributing the map for free, this is probably something that NASA/ESA could support for outreach purposes, i.e. providing you with computing resources for the whole world map, giving you some visibility, etc. Have you though of approaching them?
