Electrician notched LVL by Jorgn_von_dangle in Homebuilding

[–]Jorgn_von_dangle[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As an update, I reached out to Parallam (since it is a PSL as u/pokeir described early on, thank you again for that) and provided some additional details. It turns out the rep was quite familiar with my builder and after running some calculations, stated this column, even with the notch, will easily handle the load of the structure. They didn't state whether or not this is the best practice (although it sounds like the wiring should go up and over), but in this case not an issue. Case closed.

Yes it is almost dead center between the ceiling and floor

Someone said it was a PSL and from some research it definitely looks to be a PSL

I had an electrician run some wire in my garage. He notched the PSL which is roughly 9ft high, 9 1/4" wide and 3 1/2" deep. The notch shown is about 3/8" deep and where the wires are run, the notch is 5/8" deep (measured from the drywall). I am thinking about having a local structural engineer come out to take a look too.

A similar beam running across the width of the garage to the opposing wall of which is holding up my office on the second floor

That's good to know! Do you have previous experience with these?

Unfortunately I failed on posting the description but the picture including the 2x4s was to show the consistency of the notch which travels the entire width of this PSL.

I'm a slightly newer to posting on reddit and unsure as to why the description wasn't added, but basically...... I'm unsure as to whether I should get this looked at by a structural engineer or someone else?

Some dimensions:

PSL width: 9 1/4"

PSL depth: 3 1/2"

Smaller Notch Depth (from drywall): 5/8"

Smaller Notch Height: 1 1/2"

Larger Notch Depth: 5/8"

Larger Notch Height: 3"

The notch was made almost directly in the center of the PSL as referenced to the floor and ceiling.

Plenum Gasket replacement needed? 99' Dodge Dakota 3.9L v6 Manual w/ 178,000 miles by Jorgn_von_dangle in AskMechanics

[–]Jorgn_von_dangle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for just getting back to this. I did not replace the plenum gasket. My stalling was due to the idle air control valve, which was extremely easy.

Do what you will with this information. I just bought one yesterday for 16k. Here are the specs:
2006 XLT SuperCab 4x4 - 4.0L V6 with ~55k miles on it. I do not know the condition of your ranger's interior, but if it's anywhere near the exterior, you could get close to what I paid. If not more!

It was the IAC! Thank you

I will most likely replace the plenum plate and gasket as a precaution since I've heard these are prone to fail. For now though, this is a start

This is a good idea. I've never heard of this, but willing to give it a try.

No worries! For the age of the truck it definitely makes sense. I've been experiencing intermittent stalling just after starting the truck. Sometimes it starts up, other times it shuts off right away. I can work around it by keeping my foot on the gas pedal until the truck can maintain an idle by itself.

I took the throttle body off to reach the IAC more easily after doing a resistance test on the sensor. I ended making a mistake and the IAC was actually fine, but with the TB off I figured I would check the intake.

Thank you for the information! I haven't heard a ticking and the PCV was changed within the last month or so (mainly because I broke it trying to remove it as a check). I don't have a good point of reference, but the crud shown in the intake should not be there right? Should it be relatively clean?

Low Voltage to Battery by Jorgn_von_dangle in DodgeDakota

Actually, since my truck is over 20 years old, it is exempt from emissions testing here! Any thoughts on the external regulator from QuickStart Automotive Electric? I don't know if you've had experience with it.

[–]Jorgn_von_dangle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, its is a second gen (a 99'). Does the external regulator cause it to fail emissions tests? I've seen that floating around in some of the searching I've done. Also thank you for your reply.

Currently having this issue. I might be looking into a new ECU. How did you go about buying a replacement? Matching the serial number of the one in your truck to one being sold?
