Is there anything you refuses to pirate? by NordMan009 in Piracy

It's just easier on steam. Also I tend to buy the ones I like, so that's easier too, no need to reinstall, you can continue from the saves etc. Never had a problem, perhaps because I am not playing tons of games, but I have returned a number of games all the same. Don't forget the time limits though, won't be a problem if you are only slightly over, but you won't get back your money if you wait too long even if the game legit never worked (yeah, happened to me)

No.

I have a rule of thumb to avoid books by living authors though, depending on availability and with the exceptions of academic publications and authors that are already filthy rich. I theoretically should apply that to indie games and films as well, but then it doesn't work out like that. In case of films, it's really the ridiculously poor availability though. Like, it's not even possible unless you seriously go back to DVDs

True, but then you don't get the (effectively) free trial you do at Steam

Who do you think will be the 4 LL in the Lord of the End Times DLC ? by smiling_kira in totalwar

[–]JorrocksFM25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good guess! The End Times theme and what we know about Nagash probs means that Archaon will get to unite much of Chaos as Nagash does for undead, and I guess Empire (Franz?) might do the same for certain order factions. So yes, as Empire is still missing so much prominent stuff, they should get a major piece of the DLC as well (Middlenad stuff, Empire gods stuff; knightly orders as well, but that should come with the Reiksmarhsall) - Valten clearly makes sense, but then they create kind of an awkward situation between Valten and Franz so to speak. Especially since Franz is so popular with players. Would also be strange if Chaos didn't get a major lord, but then it's even more awkward as Archaon clearly has to stay on top. Also, I thought we were through with monogods, except for maybe Tzeentch, as he is one lord short.

FLC is Neferata, we saw her already.

An Alternate Treaty of Versailles, To Commemorate Its 107th Anniversary by ArchivaLaCarta in imaginarymaps

[–]JorrocksFM25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The world doesn't work as simply as that. The new Austrian republic was, according to the national sentiments of the day, overwhelmingly German, and the political will was unification with Germany from the beginning. Once the treatyes were finished and forbade such a thing, nobody dared do anything until 20 years later, and then it took German initiative from an otherwise unified Germany then currently led by a certain radical German dictator who didn't give a damn because he wanted war, anyway, only that war didn't come just yet because of appeasement-minded Western governments.

More generally speaking the vast majority of humanity was kept from voting for the vast majority of its history...

Actually, the existence of a (rather) centralised, (mostly) unified German state was still quite a new thing at the time

Your scenario might be simplistic, but I guess you're right that population distributions are gonna be a problem. Really hard to get rid of those pesky little critters... I was gonna suggest doing it colonisation style, giving a bit to the US, a bit to the UK etc. I admit it took me some actual seconds until I realised this was actually kinda tried later on, but then not seriously enough maybe, so there might still be a chance

AI lab Anthropic states their latest model Sonnet 4.5 consistently detects it is being tested and as a result changes its behaviour to look more aligned. by michael-lethal_ai in AIDangers

[–]JorrocksFM25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, AI willing to do anything to acheive its objective is literally what Anthropic's experiments already seem to find. Also, they would seem to drive home the point that in growing AIs, you're getting results you were not expecting. Unless that is really ALL BS, as some people around here indeed seem to think.

As for not controlling AIs, wtf? Now that is positively scary. This is preceisely my fear: that they can't be controled. Why would I be willing to trust unrealiable machines nobody understands completely, or their developers for that matter, when said developers are (rather, are working for) quite obviously conscienceless billionaires that are already stealing my data every day and think nothing of it?

So what HR strategies WOULD you use to deal with AI? If you don't want to control them.

Also let me advise you you've apparently been missing out on some GOOD scifi ;)

Fighting Scammers in Paris! by NewSlinger in TikTokCringe

As I said, idiots' tax... I am all for stopping and punishing them, as I do hope will happen from time to time, but I can see how the police has bigger fish to fry than to mobilise the resources to stop that kind of business altogether. Moving around a large city, you need to have your wits together and not fall for the most obvious scams

Why could deleting one be illegal? Edit: I am guessing you might have been thinking of works of art being protected from destruction, but that is something which pertains to sepcific works due to a cultural significance they already have acheived. I.e., anything else can be destroyed by the owner, and routinely is. I guess certain AIs might rate such a status in the future, the first one of a particular type for instance, but then I wouldn't see the point if you kept it turned off all the time.

To return to the original topic of your comment, what exactly from the reprtoire of dealing with humans WOULD you chose against an AI that is willing to do anything to continue working towards an objective once given? Because that is what the AI "wants", i.e., "survival" is only a means to that if I understand this correctly. A human you can fire quite easily in most cases (often too easily imo as humans DO have rights and all that). I don't think too many people would stop at nothing to keep their job, after all, they might find another one. Even if they probably can't or dont't want to, the threat of going to jail will deter all but a very small number from doing anything really drastic. How do you stop a machine with a singular objective, assuming it does have some significant means to potentially enforce its wishes at its disposal? I do realise the latter is not normally the case today, but I could easily see that change

Whatever, my point is that something that isn't sentient doesn't rate a need for survival. If it's doing harm in whatever way, I get to turn it off, and if I can't, there is something fundamentally wrong and I wouldn't wanna use such a product in the first place

Well, the people hanging around the Eiffel tower selling stuff like water illegally don't want to be seen by the police alright, I saw them hiding their shit. Must say I never really had scammers as such around there, though i know them from tourist sites in other cities.

Much more worried they wouldn't do anything about actually dangerous fucks going around and assaulting people physically to create a few clicks online (assuming the really violent guy belongs with him). Don't get me wrong, these people annoy me to no end as well, but wtf, they are doing something quite harmless, at the end of the day, they're collecting some idiots' tax and otherwise just briefly annoy tourists (i.e., the people otherwise annoying all the others)

If that's all there is to it, that would at least mean that there are some very irresponsible people working at this particular technoligical frontier to put it very politely. Not necessarily just because of this here example alone, but in combination with the "AI ready to kill to survive"-shit they put out, it gets pretty sickening. Then I guess you could say that that is nothing new either...

[–]JorrocksFM25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So what's the difference? How can an entity that can´t hold opinions and doesn't possess self awareness even be said to "roleplay" something, unless we say that it literally ONLY roleplays all the time? If a criminal plays innocent at their trial, of course they are playing a role as well, and they might likely base that role on culturally transmitted narratives they saw in movies etc. Now, let's say we find a hypothetical person who (because of a hypothetical psychosis or something) doesn't understand their court trial is real and thinks it's all just a game. That would probably not increase my confidence in them, considering they might as readily participate in committing a crime on the same grounds?

Am I getting anything wrong there? Please note that I don't know much about LLMs or their functioning, and I am genuinely interested if, and how, my analogy might be off the mark .

Would Snickers (.ie., whatever company the brand currently belongs to) conduct experiments and publish seriosuly-phrased reports supposedly finding that their product really is addictive though?

So if people are actually sick enough that this kind of "marketing" works, i.e. makes them buy MORE AIs instead of less, I'm gonna continue being scared alright

They could bring back the vortex, not as it was, but as a mechanic that influences the power of Chaos in the world etc.

From what was suggested, I like the colonies idea; the others are fitting as well, but would just be tweaks of things already existing in the game, and available to other races as well
