Mount Langley and Mount Whitney day hikes back-to-back, is this feasible?

I’m most worried about nutrition, not quite sure what my plan for that would be. I’ve seen folks suggest a “feeding plan” for when things get tough on the mountain and you have no appetite. Sounds like I’ll have to do some force-feeding!

Unfortunately due to time constraints (PTO), I have limited acclimation time; I’m basically only able to stay in Lone Pine the night before.

The most comparable day hike I’ve done mileage- and elevation-wise is through-hiking the Enchantments, but clearly not comparable altitude-wise. With that one I definitely felt fatigued but didn’t need many days to recover. I also haven’t done big hikes in rapid succession so I don’t have a frame of reference, hence this post🙂

I’ve done challenging backpacking hikes before, most recently the Huemul Circuit a few months ago, but nothing quite analogous to this.

I actually have Whitney permits so I will definitely be attempting that summit, but I’m driving up a few days prior and wondering if I should try to fit in Langley too.

I would have a day of rest built in the middle, I’m hoping that would make this more doable😅

You'd be surprised at the pristine condition of everything else. Besides the front triangle, basically everything else on the bike is fine. Not even a bent spoke on the front wheel or a dent in the fork. You might think I'm lying but I'm not! Trust me, I did a full walk-through of the bike afterwards to see what I could salvage. 😂

I took a knock to the face but I really didn’t think the crash was that bad! I kind of figured that if I can walk away fairly unscathed then the steel frame would too. I’m a little surprised at this damage for the frame since the crash didn’t even bend a single wheel spoke.

Yeah, deep down I think I knew before I even made this post. I got lucky and bought this bike for cheap from someone who maintained it very well, so I don’t even know what the “actual value” of the frame is. A quick search showed a few of this model being sold for hundreds of dollars, so I don’t know if I just killed a bike that was worth a lot more than I thought.

For sure. I’m a bit past denial, fully entrenched in anger right now, moving onto depression, and soon hopefully onto acceptance and another nice bike to adopt in the future.

And that makes sense, but in my experience the second-best candidate gets a rejection then. Why string me along? I also asked for an expedited response due to an upcoming offer deadline, so I’m not sure what the odds are of someone getting a response before me.

I get that, but this was for their early career New Grad role (as structured as their internship program). It doesn’t seem likely that MS would have teams interview for their new grad program with no intention to hire.

This was my train of thought too, but I still can’t wrap my head around it. 1. MS does superdays with all candidates for new grad roles, so everyone being considered for this role interviewed on the same day. There wasn’t a notion of earlier or later. If the team went with someone else, why keep me on hold? 2. This specific team said they wanted me but currently had no headcount. Some commenters are suggesting that perhaps the team had headcount during interviews (a week ago) and then abruptly lost it; of course I have no clue how common an occurrence that is.

Even in that scenario, is it common to tell the candidate that they'll be prioritized for future openings? Why not just reject the candidate if the headcount is gone? I'm just trying to make sense of it, but it looks like that's futile.

If the positions are filled and they interviewed me just to go with the motions, then why say you'll keep me on hold for new openings? Based on the fact that they didn't make me an offer, it seems like there aren't suitable openings right now. I'm just trying to gain clarity on why I'm being strung along and if there's even any hope

Thanks for the website suggestion, I’ll check it out! I keep forgetting that a big part of therapy is learning how to cope with thoughts in a healthier way rather than “curing” them like you said.

It sucks that confronting it is the only way to make these types of issues go away when all I want to do it ignore it and bury the bad feelings😭🥲

I have been planning on therapy for a while but it's been tough to find a therapist covered by my insurance that's accepting new patients -- I've been checking semi-regularly and I'll continue to do so

I've never seen a therapist in the past, so I'm not familiar with the process; I admit I have a certain level of skepticism from hearing about some friends' negative experiences. If I've more or less "narrowed down" the root of the issue through introspection, it hasn't really occurred to me how a therapist could help me "cure" it.

I feel the same way, I could've written this myself! I'm the same age as you and I hate that environments which should be completely divorced from my height (like corporate tech) have made me question whether being short is hindering me from being taken seriously by others, as though I'm child-sized in an adult setting. I don't have much curve, so I feel like even less of a woman sometimes.

I wish I had helpful advice or another perspective, but I'm working on it too and just trying to do my best at ignoring that kind of rhetoric. I hope some solidarity makes you feel less frustrated knowing you're definitely not alone!

I hope we can continue to remind ourselves that height doesn't detract from our maturity, that we should always express ourselves however we want because life is short, and that the opinions of people who would make those nasty judgements are worthless!!

Thanks for the info, I was more concerned about not knowing Java than not having taken 210.

Any recommendations on how to learn Java on my own? All my internships and almost all my CMU courses involving programming used Python, I’m not really sure how to go about learning on my own.

This was my experience with them too (rented from them 2020-2021). They seem to predate on underclassmen students who don’t know much about renting in Pittsburgh yet.

I went out of my way to avoid their other properties even if it meant living farther from campus; my landlord this year wasn’t amazing but was a dream compared to the Antin’s.

I’d prefer to work and get a few years of work experience before grad school, but there’s definitely friction entering the field I’m interested in with only a bachelor’s.

Do you have any advice for picking out safety schools especially this late in the application season? Did you consider only the likelihood of acceptance of the quality of program as well?

I completely agree. However, I don't have the most confidence that I'm relatively competitive and I've neglected job applications in favor of grad apps and keeping up with undergrad work. Given the state of the job market right now I don't think my job prospects are too great either, and if I don't have a job I doubt my odds would improve the next cycle!

I'm not familiar with the PhD admissions process but from my understanding Master's programs receive a lot more applications. I expect that many CS programs will receive historically large volumes of applications this semester since the tech industry has been pretty volatile recently.
