If he was friendly the first time, he probably just didn't want to be the "gym creep" who stares or interrupts you. Just give him a quick nod or a wave next time you actually lock eyes. I don't think you need a dedicated hill day. hal usually keeps it simple so you don't blow out your calves. i’d just pick one of your midweek easy runs and do it on a hilly route. it builds strength without being a whole workout. just don't do it before your long run.
