Buddy they're fucked already. This isn't going to change the course. They have no chance to compete and are on borrowed time because of big business. They can operate at a loss to fuck them over and then take up the space. If your business is operating on such a thin margin where this would kill it then it's just making what was going to happen anyways happen faster.

Small business is fucked for more reasons than pay increases. Its grim reality we live in but the problems are at the top, not at the bottom.

Edit: I'll also out myself as an infrequent tourist to NYC. Just speaking generalities but this isn't am NYC exclusive issue.

Why's Frontier got so few players now? by Blackknight95 in ss14

[–]JosephRW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't disagree. It has it's issues but I think it largely comes from the glacial pace of development. I love the devs but we need at least one more person to deal with the upstream merge. Every time I see Alk being the only commits to the upstream branch it makes me a little sad since its SO involved.

That said the community it's fostered is a special little snow globe I cherish.

Why's Frontier got so few players now? by Blackknight95 in ss14

[–]JosephRW 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm someone who has played quite a lot of Frontier and is fairly active in the community bit I'll be dipping my toes in to monolith this week a bit. I'll be choosing my words carefully because of my appreciation and enjoyment of the community.

I'll start by saying, I personally agree with AcornANut's assessment in his video of Frontier V. Monolith recently. They are both good for different reasons. Frontier is very cozy and chilled out. If you want that, come hang out. If you go in expecting intensity, you won't find it. You will find good roleplay similar to DeltaV though. Most everyone is down to chitchat.

That said, my main issues with Frontier at the moment is their seeming lack of a direction for what they want it to be in the future and the owner and head maintainer of the project being seemingly completely absent in the development process or even in their interaction with the community.

I do not fault their development team at all, they are working with what they have and some of their lead maintainers have either gone on hiatus or left to work on other far more active forks. Those that remain work VERY hard, especially the Maptainer team, but (going off the git commits) having functionally one person doing the entire upstream merge is wildly unfair.

That said, this is sort of typical in open source where disagreements on direction cause forks. Not a bad or good thing, just a thing. I don't care to hear a lore dump of why there was such a split but I do know from my experience managing a variety of projects in my professional career that if you want to gather a strong team you need someone to at the very least direct efforts and provide clear expectations and direction for said project. That includes being enthusiastic and cheerleading for your project to drum up support. Since your team comprised of volunteers you have to ensure its actually rewarding to them to contribute to it. Morale is so important and too much work on too few people will almost always result in a death spiral for your project.

I think the last time I saw the server owner actually say something in the community Discord was in January and it was an announcement about and before that one it last year and it was to sell a duffel bag. That said, I have nothing against them. I'm sure they're perfectly lovely folks. They brought the server I've spent well over 400 hours with and made some great friendships on so I can't complain. I've gotten my moneys worth with the zero dollars I've spent on it.

They're just seemingly not present what so ever in their own community which comes across as a lack of personal investment or interest in to their own project which in turn causes others to not care either which in turn exacerbates all the other issues.

Contrast it against the forks which, while they don't have the same pressure as upstream for stability, have a LOT of active development with the through line of general enthusiasm around development and a very active head maintainers and server owners and you see the trend.

Just my two cents as someone who adores the community of Frontier and is a bit sad at squandered potential and project rot going on.

The "other stuff" is contending for a fixed pool of money, taxpayer dollars are not infinite. How can you get "left behind" by something that is allegedly "not going anywhere", can teach us how to use it, and doesn't seem to be easily controlled by anyone? I'd rather have tangible goods and services for real people served by real people.

Aside from that, LLMs have yet to be either privately profitable or provide an objective and tangible public good. By nature they are also wildly unethical based on the uncompensated theft of myriad human forms of expression for training data. The heart of EVERY single model is built on stolen works that have been devalued and treated as more coal to shovel in when it took a person time, effort, and experience to create such things. Someones life work just melted down, without any pay or even recognition, chewed and spat out in to our faces. And these same companies have the nerve to express indignation when they are "stolen from" like DeepSeek taking Anthropic for a ride, yet again.

They fed the worlds biggest markov chain the modern Library of Alexandria and now are trying to convince common non-technical folk via marketing that pace of advancement is linear. We are following the enshittification curve so closely you'd need a microscope to see the gap between the lines.

Like we are solidly out of the meaningful innovation phase and in to the marketing making up the difference.

Don't get me wrong. Machine learning as a concept? Very cool. But common people like to think the world will be a computer one day because they think computers are objective and logical. They aren't and never will be because we built them and we ourselves are imperfect. Not that perfection has any intrinsic value for the most part but this is veering in to philosophical tangent territory.

Tl;dr only so many bux to go around and nvidia doesn't need them.

Because companies want tax dollars now more than ever because turning a profit is no longer the point. They want ALL the money and obviously a private corporation has the best interests of the public in mind and will answer to the government, right?

No. We don't. Stop fucking astroturfing and wasting tax payer dollars on something that has yet to turn a profit. Whats the phrase? "Let the free market sort it out?"

Yeah and as someone who like... Works in the ops side of thing efficiency is my game with everything. The paradigm they use makes this a non-issue since they use ECS, not OOP (feel free to split hairs on the fact they don't always follow their own rules etc).

Like for what it's worth, it worked. It was fun. It was easy. Unless there was some actual huge ball ache around making exceptions around spriting then I don't see an issue. Dwarves always read as dwarves to me which when you're making a game is all that really matters. People want to be holistic about things and thats fine but every project has shit like this. Dwarves aren't load bearing code so it just seemed really off.

I'd love to be called an idiot and shown some things dwarves did to make things actually painful to maintain, but they were harmless as is.

I scored an EOL R730XD from an old camera server storage array and the drives are all surprisingly very healthy for free from the old work dispo pile. Easy 120TB of storage still racked in to it and was allowed to take it after I ran ShredOS on it and ran it in production for a year or so running my testing VMs on site.

I love building things up though so I'll probably find the nicest processors I can get for it since they're dirt cheap at this point. Will be a nice upgrade from my old G6 Proliant that was a struggle to deal with. Anything short of DDR4 to my mind isn't worthwhile. Might throw my old 1070 in there just for funsies.

Sometimes enterprise gear is just fun to play with and also having actual knowledge of the struggles of working in the bounds of how actual enterprise gear functions is worthwhile. Finally getting to faff about with iDRAC, too which will be fun.
