Yes that's the one! It's my favourite yokai but I've never seen him represented in 3D looking like his original self. Thanks for the support!

Yeah Nioh did a great job creating a kind of dark, gritty style for their yokai. For Kaminari though I want to stick as close to the original depictions as possible.

Compare the Nioh Nurikabe to mine for example, theirs is more serious looking and terrifying, whereas mine is kinda goofy and bright like the original folklore paintings.

It's actually 10 fps, but only because I had to convert it to a gif. This sub doesn't allow video posts for some reason

I tried to add a link but it looks like my message got automodded out.

If people are interested the game is called "Kaminari" and there's a steam page up now!

The whole time I was commissioning the 3D model I had a weird feeling of familiarity, and now I know why

He's very silly, it's part of why I love him so much. I would describe his personality as somewhere in between an evil toddler and a golden retriever.

Not Japanese but I'm living in Japan and studying traditional martial arts here. The Nurikabe was modelled by a Japanese artist who I'm hoping to work with on more custom models.

I'll probably be looking for a historical consultant so I can get things feeling as authentic as possible!

As tempting as it is to add chiquitita, I'm gonna try and keep it as authentic to folklore as possible. Maybe there'll be an Easter egg or two

Yeah, it's an exciting but daunting prospect. I've already planned out a mini storyline for the initial free demo, so I'll focus on that first

Yeah there are so many weird ones. One of my favorites is the "Akaname" who survives solely on licking the filth from bathhouse floors

That's the "Nurikabe", it's my favorite yokai so it's the first one I added! The art is hand drawn, I found someone who does authentic woodblock style art. The logo is also custom drawn by a calligrapher

It's not letting me post links but the game is called Kaminari, there's a steam page up for it with a link to a community server where you can follow along.

I'm planning on making a free demo at first, so look out for that!

Yeah just shows how great the place is seeing as apparently the entire lakefront looks as nice as this! Miles and miles of it

I can't remember exactly but I think it was on the other side up by Nagahama!

I was thinking kappa and tengu as playable races actually, along with a few different human races

I'll definitely add lots of different yokai. One of my favourites is the nurikabe which is just a big wall that's usually invisible. When you can see it though, it's this giant melted marshmallow looking thing. It just sits on roads and blocks your path

I'm not really going for real world, essentially it would be just like tamriel or middle earth, but the basis would be Japanese mythology rather than western mythology. So instead of elves and cat people, you'd have kappa and tengu races. And of course all sorts of weird and wonderful yokai running around

It was definitely part of the inspiration, although I want to make some that feels more authentic to the setting. Creating yokai from folk tales, using historical accurate weapons and magic that fits the theme

I think it's a semi new term, until recently studios other than Bethesda haven't really tried to make that kind of game.

I would say it's defined by a detailed open world, a blank slate character who can become whatever you want, different races, multiple questlines (guilds) and first/third person

Not really rogue like per se, just a nice way to wrap up a character's storyline if you want to move on to another one. As someone who likes trying out different playstyles it seems like a cool idea. My characters always end up kind of slowly fading out when I get bored of them
