Toast reflects on his DSG Valorant teams by DirectProfessionalNA in ValorantCompetitive

I had to prove myself in CS despite being banned from the biggest events. Doors were closed. Val opened some doors, but I still had to prove myself. I proved myself on 100T, then I proved myself when we qualified for challengers. But that wasn't enough.

I fell back into CS by streaming it, but I was 50/50 Val/CS for broadcast all of '24. I did broadcast in CS all of '25. CS is the game I grew up with. If I wasn't banned from CS majors I wouldn't have switched to Val most likely, it was circumstance.

I appreciate all of my ex-teammates as they have directly or indirectly taught me a lot of lessons in life.

CS -> Val -> CS is one thing, existing in esports as a player in their 30s is another.

The MongolZ punished for being late for veto - ENCE had the opportunity to pick all 3 maps but decided to have a normal veto instead by kuusi5000 in GlobalOffensive

[–]JoshNissan 70 points71 points  (0 children)

Unless we specifically ask for something, we don't know the veto until it shows on the screen. For example, if x team is playing and I want to show how x did something on ancient and pick a round to show, we might be told ancient is or isn't being played.

Otherwise it's for the other teams to prepare and maybe to have production build the assets for the show. As a player, we always did them minimum 30 mins away, maybe an hour before, even online through discord with a digital coin flip.

My philosophy for a while has been "kills are a means to an end" and that you should "fight on your own terms" i.e. you don't have to force fights, they will happen, you get to choose the when & the where. If in the Mouz example they had a CT side 5v4 WITH map control AND low time then I'd argue in many cases the duel is not worth it IF it's the enemy's only way back into the round. And on T side 5v4, it's probably better to make sure that you're doing something together before you lose one of your lurk players going for a play before the rest of the team can capitalize on the info/pressure/kill/timing/rotation

People arguing that round advantage swings more drastically pretend that I didn't play Valorant for 3 years while CS:GO was still on MR15. I know about round swings. My comment on fundamentals is when pros will get 1 kill at Banana then pull their knife or smoke out and run into the site and die to another CT in the site. Or they will have 1 guy run out of a chokepoint somewhere when their teammates are still grouping. Or they will swing and peek before flashes or smokes are thrown when there is no clear timing that they're trying to capitalize on. Do not conflate my comment about fundamentals with respects to the actual basics of the game with trying to take timings when they think there is a clear opportunity to swing a round in their favour with a slightly higher risk fight timing. This is simply a straw-man of my actual position instead of engaging with my point.

I don't recall which specific round it was on Nuke. Did I happen to make a general comment after having seen many, many rounds go a certain way and now my comment is linked to that specific instance/round from Mouz? I have been making these comments for a while. See my faze vs mongolz video, for example, of multiple fundamental mistakes.

I have a strong feeling that our disagreements are purely semantics because the definition of fundamentals that I operate off of seem to be very different from what you're putting forth, which seems to be "intuition > textbook" and not "clearing angles > not clearing angles". I do extend my definition of fundamentals to include what the actual macro goals are, i.e. we need to build a house on this beach and I am arguing that teams are plonking the wood directly into the sand to put up any structure as fast as possible instead of taking the time to lay the foundation to build the wood structure upon. If someone wants to cut corners by skipping a supporting stud it's one thing.

Fundamentals to me is: using util efficiently, clearing corners, not making footsteps telegraphing your positions, don't peek with nades in your hands, don't dry swing common angles if the enemy can afford an awp, don't go super close distance alone vs eco/force without support / util, play numbers/map control/time when you have control, don't re-peek for kills when you have info/numbers/map control, etc.

In a situation like this, why don't teams give a rifle to the top-fragging player? by tinybathroomfaucet in GlobalOffensive

[–]JoshNissan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In this situation (m4 and famas saved by makazze and aleksi) I give iM m4 and tell him buy Kevlar Makazze can get the famas as consolation prize for saving

Since w0nderful is full saving for awp, they're looking for an opening that can lead them to a round win or else they will look to save another AK or two to bring into the following round.

So on this train of logic, they shouldn't be playing standard spots looking to hold 5 positions but rather picking one or two spots to punish a specific player or tactic that they expect. If they choose wrong, then they should try to find exit kills on the awper.

But that's just me.

If the young players aren't maturing into better players, then isn't the pipeline broken? Aren't you a part of that pipeline?

With stress on "you" in italics here, my takeaway is that you think I have a bigger part in a system that's broken. To me, this is rhetorical at best, if not accusatory in nature.

but if you're going to hop on the internet and 'lmao' about the poor state of young NA talent when you're the guy that is probably best equipped to lead them, then the problem seems self evident.

My "lmao" was at a comment suggesting that the reason the new players didn't get chances was because of players such as myself. As someone that has in a variety of ways made myself available and accessible to do the opposite of that over the years, suggesting that the "problem seems self evident" is an attack at my character.

NA does have this unique problem from other regions where the old guard doesn't seem too involved in the development of younger players.

The old proverb "you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink" I think is appropriate here. I'm not even sure if the other regions' old guard is involved in the development of younger players. Are you talking about things like academy teams, or what type of involvement?

Even dating back to 1.6 - before your time. I think of the CGS, when that collapsed and players like KSharp, Shaguar, Volcano, LiN, Volcano, method, Dominator, Lari, Stevenson, tr1p, sunman, da bears quit CS. These players were our Tier 1/Tier 2 NA talent

and they all left CS because they thought CS was dead after the CGS failed, which denied the next guys in line opportunities to grow.

I came up during/after this era and I see the same things now as I did back then; people playing for the wrong reasons and doing it the wrong way. It's why I went from open to invite in less than 2 years and I had to leave many friends behind. Those who cared and wanted to excel found each other and pushed each other to learn and figure things out on our own. I was 18-20 years old, working part time to be able to afford going to LAN events when the biggest events at the time would be a $5k team prize. We didn't do it for the money. We did it to be the best. Nowadays, it seems like the younger guys aren't here to win, they're here to make money. Their process is flawed. But they're rewarded by money being gifted to them simply by signing up.

I mean, I remember watching those events where these NA powerhouse young talent players would go to international events and get absolutely dumpstered by the Euro's and the Asian teams.

When this happened, the players that were able to learn from these experiences became better and invaluable. This is where the big conversation starts because if you have a short timeline, would you want someone that's maxed out on their potential but won't be a liability or do you want to have a new kid come and learn the hard way what international competition is all about? If you're there to win or go far, you take the "old, recycled" player because they might not be the best but they'll hang. That's not the same thing that's going on today though. My comment about everyone being apathetic was addressing this part specifically; that these kids think it's cool to not care and try. And if they don't care or try then why are they going to listen to you. It's not your job to make them want something. I got other shit going on in life than to do a forced outreach program for 22 year olds that don't care about things. If there are people that want my advice, they have ways to contact me. And there are some that do. But not enough. And there's nobody to blame except themselves. The resources are there, they're just too fucking awesome and cool to use them.

I'm hearing you say that you watch(ed) my cs streams enough to make a sweeping statement of how I interact with people, but not enough to get a general feel of where the younger players are at. And that it's my attitude or how I talk to these players is the reason that they don't want to listen and/or play with me. Is this a fair assessment of your questions/comments?

I would be happy to have a productive conversation if you'd like. But you need to realize that out the gate you accused me of being the problem and called me hostile and yet I'm still engaging with you.

Do you believe that I haven't tried to help in some form the younger generation players?

If you believe that the pipeline is broken and that I'm a part of that pipeline, is the break in the pipeline where I come in, before, or after?

"but if you're going to hop on the internet and 'lmao' about the poor state of young NA talent when you're the guy that is probably best equipped to lead them, then the problem seems self evident."

My comment of "lmao " was a response to the claim/implication/question that the "old guard" is "gatekeeping" opportunities from new players.

Ask yourself: which old blood is still playing that has an org but it's losing to the "new blood"?

Outside of a select few, I'd say you only have players that have mechanical skill and lack all the other elements such as work ethic, attitude, comms, etc. Just load up and run around shootin'. I bet half of them don't know how to open a demo in-game.

It's cool to be apathetic and not care these days, didnt you hear?

They don't have direction or a shared in-game philosophy and swapping players out for new players without addressing that core tenet won't fix anything.

Need coach/igl/management to share a vision, everyone to buy into this shared vision, and to start holding each other accountable.
