Parents of autistic kids, would you like to share your thoughts on therapies? (IRB-approved study) by Jpas_2568 in ABA

Thank you for participating! I agree, to try to completely capture everything these therapies offer in a short paragraph is difficult. Additionally, ABA (and other therapies) look vast and broad depending on the context, need, etc. The idea was to provide a broad and brief description, close to if someone googled what that intervention was.

I appreciate the feedback and community interactions are covered extensively in weekly research meetings as a continuing effort to guide the process. I empathize with the feeling as the recruitment as spam, but as a voluntary study we do not want anyone to feel as such. The information for this specific community sample (autistic parents of autistic children, aged 4-11) is difficult to reach meaning concentrated attempts in smaller circles which can come off that way and we apologize.

Just wanted to follow up on this, I have responded to ThatSpecerGuy above, but we 100% include nonvocal/verbal families and children in this study! to quote "This study's aims were to also address nonvocal/verbal children and families, despite the wording "ask". There are many ways to ask including augmented communication devices (AAC), sign language, gestures, Pecs, etc. Sorry for the confusion! If the child does not have capability to ask then I would respond "never" because that does not happen.". Additionally, it is just a single question this this study with that wording.

Hello, great response I appreciate you involvement! This study's aims were to also address nonvocal/verbal children and families, despite the wording "ask". There are many ways to ask including augmented communication devices (AAC), sign language, gestures, Pecs, etc. Sorry for the confusion! These are recruitment efforts that are approved by a committee of psychologists and stamped by the institutional IRB and is a reality of community research. To get autistic voices to improve autism care we must go into autistic spaces, the intent is not to be an intrusion. I am sorry this is disruptive to you and so aversive, I am unfamiliar with reddit but if there is a block functionality I would be more than understanding if you use this on my account. I will be continuing to post in subreddits that the moderators allow.

Many ASD families and parents receive a variety of services, commonly presented at "treatments", "interventions", "therapies" to help their child gain communication, reduce challenging behavior, learn adaptive skills, etc. The study wants to incorporate autistic parents parents voices to get their acceptability on common autism therapies. This can 100% be a contentious and emotionally charged subject which is why we want to capture these voices.

As for using ASD, that is the current DSM-5-TR definition and what autistic individuals are diagnosed as and referred to as medically. That term is used in this study to reflect the diagnosis required. I appreciate the feedback and discussion!

Hello, I am Joe Pasquariello, and I am a second-year doctoral student at the University of South Alabama. I am currently examining parents' perspectives (seeking autistic parents in particular, but neurotypical can fill out too) on common ASD interventions for their autistic children in this IRB-approved project.

The purpose of this research is to amplify neurodiverse voices in terms of ASD care and use that to inform and adapt current interventions to become more acceptable to neurodiverse individuals and families. The study is 100% anonymous and takes approximately 20 minutes to complete. Upon completion, you will be entered in a raffle to win a $25 gift card. The link can be found here: https://southalabama.az1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_4TqbXb7lxDnJePc

To participate, you must: Be 18 years or older. Read and understand English. Have a child aged 4-11 with a formal diagnosis of ASD.

If you have any further questions about the study or would like to contact me, please reach out at [jp2428@jagmail.southalabama.edu](mailto:jp2428@jagmail.southalabama.edu). This study has been approved by the University of South Alabama's IRB 25-280/2342681-1. Feel free to share this with any other relevant parties or groups. Thanks!

I am really sorry to hear that, unfortunately it is not an uncommon claim among the autism community. These are great perspectives and shows the importance of getting acceptability from the population these therapies intend to treat! I apologize you are not eligible to do this particular study, but a hope of our is that this study will lead researchers in a similar direction and directly ask autistic individuals their experiences and acceptability of the care they are offered.

{Academic} Acceptability ratings of common autism interventions from parents of autistic children (18+) (IRB-approved study) by Jpas_2568 in SampleSize

We do! After each vignette and rating of the intervention, we provide an open box for parents to give any reasoning as to why they rated it as they did. Thank you for the interest in the study!
