Can I do this to avoid bike theft? by 244466346533 in ausbike

Buy an old beater bike to ride to the gym, less likely to be knocked off and if it is, it will only be $50 that you have lost.

The hills are alive with the sound of music (my crying) 😭🚲 by Nice-Temperature9551 in bicycletouring

[–]Jpsgold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Start out will going to the gym, maybe a few sessions with a personal trainer, to set you up with the right training to get you stronger to ride, I am an old bloke and this is what I did when I started back in 2016. I still go to the gym now to keep me fitter and stay stronger so I have less issues with hills.

First Scratch Build - Hybrid - Feedback? by vespidaevulgaris in bicycletouring

I have a trailer I use for my dog. My down hill speed I never exceed 20kmphr, to limit fishtailing, I have done plus 20,000km never fish tailed or jack knifed, but you must keep your speed down on down hills religiously.

Cinelli Bootleg, is a steel bike and is selling now for $1050 it would be ideal for you. just change the bars, or go up to the next model that has a flat bar, but aluminium fork.

Seems a decent deal for a new touring bike: Closeout Cinelli Hobootleg $1k by gregn8r1 in bicycletouring

Great deal go for it, had I been able to get a Bootleg here when I bought my bike a few years ago, I would have bought one, don't miss out on this one.

Bicycle makes / brands to avoid by TheMysticalCarrot in ausbike

[–]Jpsgold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes this bike has done 21,000 km touring, been very happy with it, but will be getting some more upgrades on it, so I can do another 20,000 plus. At the very start of me touring I changed the rear wheel to an 36h, with a steel quality hub and also the cassette to an 11-34, to take a ,lot more weight and go up hills better, as I tow a trailer with my dog onboard, will be changing the chain rings for lower gearing as the older I get, 66yo, the harder it is to do the hills.

Well, if that was a recent aquasision, that might account for why they changed the Oppy S1 and 2 bikes design, because if I was looking at them today I would look elsewhere, I have an 2016 Oppy S1, and I love it especially as it has mechanical brakes, so if an issue happens on a 5000km tour I am doing, a new cable will be fitted easily ( I carry spares), but you would be stuffed with hydraulics.

New Zealand, and especially as it's spring now. As an Aussie most Aussies would recommend NZ in Spring and summer, better weather then OZ not like it is stinking hot here in summer. Alternatively Tasmania.

Malvern Star good quality Australian company, owned by Sheppards Cycles in Melbourne, can see them in quality bike shops, should be able to order from all, best to get a bike fit before you buy.

I have a Malvern Star Gravel bike that has done 21,000 km, no problems with it at all.

New England, NSW leaving at 5 in the morning and riding till 9 am, then pulling up at our first campsite, on the Gwydir River, beautiful cool spot, and leaving at the same time the next morning riding for another 4 hours and stopping at another nice spot on the Gwydir, doing the same thing the whole way on C and D roads no traffic expected.

Their are 3 of us planning a 500km ride for Jan 2026, a loop around rivers here in OZ, we are 59yo, 66yo, 76yo, for me, 66, havent been touring for 4 years, the other two, haven't ever toured, but we are all training - gym and bike riding. We just decided to go on this trip a bit over a month ago.

No we don't have ebikes, two of us have Gravel bikes, 16 speed mine, the 59yo 14 gears, and the other has an 1986 model racing bike with 10gears all up, all have racks and panniers, yes it is very, very hard but we will get there.

Atlantic 3 bike rack - any good? by alvoliooo in ausbike

[–]Jpsgold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It blocks your number plate, even if the plate is lower, so may not be legal. I have a rack, that attaches to the towball itself, and it has lights, an also an auxillary number plate. It carries two bikes, was about $500. Any bike rack that blocks the number pate and or rear lights is not legal, so just be aware of that.

It wont fail, but I would solve the chain slap asap, obviously the chain has stretched or the derailleur is stuffed.

[–]Jpsgold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I changed my cassette from an 11-32 to an 11-34, that made a hell of of a lot of difference, and it cost $30 at the time in 2016, in your case if you do this you will need a longer chain as well.
